Buday Grand Slam Helps Lift RV Baseball Over Chicago on Saturday

CHICAGO, Ill. – With the game against the Maroons starting an hour later than expected to help get the field ready for the RV Washington University in St. Louis baseball team's game three against Chicago in UAA action this weekend, the Bears bounced back with a dominant 9-2 at Anderson Field after dropping the doubleheader on Friday.

Game 3: WashU 9, Chicago 2
A scoreless game through three innings turned into a blowout win for the Bears as WashU scored six times in the top of the fourth to put themselves out of reach.

Junior Shane Pellegrino led off the frame with a single to center. Senior Braden Mazone looked to sacrifice bunt to advance Pellegrino to second, but an error on the third baseman saw the Bears have runners on first and second.

Senior Justin Zachery followed with a walk to load the bases with no outs. After a flyout to center, sophomore Miles Birke dropped a single in right field that advanced all runners and scored Pellegrino from third, breaking the tie and giving WashU its first lead of the series, 1-0.

Sophomore Anthony Equale was hit by a pitch to push all runners a base forward and score the Bears' second run of the contest. After the Maroons got the second out of the inning, senior Brandon Buday took the first pitch he saw over the fence in right-center field for a grand slam to clear the bases and put WashU ahead 6-0.

The Maroons got one run back in the bottom of the fifth to get on the board. However, the Bears got back out in front by six with lone run in the top of the seventh, 7-1. WashU added two more in the top of the eighth.

Birke led off with an infield single and reached second on a throwing error by the catcher. Equale then earned a walk before the Maroons struck out the next two Bears. Graduate Noah Reichman walked to load the bases. Pellegrino followed with his third hit of the game to center field that scored both Birke and Equale, giving the Bears the 9-1 lead.

After the Maroons picked up one run in the bottom of the eighth, a scoreless ninth inning allowed WashU to take the game 9-2.

Pellegrino's three hits led the Bears as he finished going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. Birke and Buday also recorded a multi-hit game.

Sophomore Isaac Zhang (2-0) got his second win of the season pitching the first 7.1 innings allowing just two runs, neither of them earned while striking out four and walking two.

WashU and Chicago wrap up their series with a single game on Sunday, April 6. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
