CHICAGO, Ill. – After three high-scoring games this series, the finale between the RV Washington University in St. Louis baseball team and RV Chicago on Sunday did not see a multi-base hit from either team as the Maroons closed out the series with a 2-1 win at Anderson Field.
Game 4: Chicago 2, WashU 1
The Sunday finale between the UAA opponents saw the Maroons get on the board first with a lone run in the bottom of the second. With runners on second and third, Chicago took advantage of a wild pitch to score first, 1-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Maroons loaded the bases with just one out and were able to score the runner from third on a fielder's choice to second, putting themselves ahead 2-0 with an insurance run.
They would need it as the Bears responded in the top of the sixth. With one out, senior
Brandon Buday reached first on an error by the third baseman. After graduate
Noah Reichman earned a walk, both he and Buday stole their next base in a double-steal to put runners on second and third with just one out.
Chicago was able to grab a flyout to right to get the second out of the inning. However, a wild pitch to first-year
Cooper Greene on ball four not only allowed him to reach first but allowed Reichman to take third and Buday to score, cutting the lead down to just one run.
Neither team was able to get a runner over to third the rest of the contest as the Maroons were able to hold on and wrap up the series with the 2-1 win.
Buday, Reichman, Greene, and senior
Braden Mazone all finished with a hit for WashU. Sophomore
Townsend Stevenson (1-2) took the loss on the hill, pitching the first 4.0 innings and finishing with four strikeouts and two walks.
WashU stays on the road next weekend when they travel to the Empire State to take on NYU in another crucial UAA series. The four-game set with the Violets kicks off at 3 p.m. ET on Friday, April 11 at the Staten Island University Hospital Community Park in Staten Island, N.Y. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12 beginning at 12 p.m. ET before closing out the weekend on Sunday, April 13 at 11 a.m. with a single game.
