ATLANTA, Ga. – After an extra innings game yesterday, the RV Washington University in St. Louis baseball team got a doubleheader split on Saturday afternoon with RV Emory at Chappell Park in Atlanta. The Eagles escaped the first game with a 7-6 walk-off win before the Bears rebounded with a 5-1 win in game two to earn the split.
Game 1: Emory 7, WashU 6
Down 1-0 going into the second inning, first-year
Ryan Soong hit a one-out home run over the fence in left field to tie the game up at 1-1. Graduate
Will Yarbro hit a single through the left side and was followed by WashU's second home run of the contest with a two-RBI homer to left field by sophomore
Anthony Equale, putting the Bears up 3-1.
The Eagles responded by retaking the lead 5-3 in the bottom of the second when they scored four runs on one hit while taking advantage of two WashU errors in the frame.
Soong and Yarbro led off the fourth with back-to-back singles that saw runners on the corners with no outs. Yarbro stole second before a sacrifice fly by Equale to left field scored Soong from third and cut the lead down to 5-4.
The fifth inning saw graduate
Colter Couillard-Rodak start things off with a walk. After back-to-back flyouts senior
Braden Mazone hit the third Bears' home run of the game with a two-run shot to right center, giving the Bears the 6-5 advantage. A single and a double by Emory in the bottom of the inning tied the game up once more, 6-6.
The Eagles went on to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth with just one out before a single up the middle saw Emory walk off with the 7-6 victory.
First-year
Cooper Greene, Soong, and Yarbro all had a multi-hit game while Mazone finished going one-for-three with two RBIs and a run scored. He also walked twice.
Sophomore
Owen Block took the loss pitching the ninth inning.
Game 2: WashU 5, Emory 1
The Eagles took a quick 1-0 lead on two hits in the bottom of the first and would maintain that lead until the sixth inning.
Couillard-Rodak led off the sixth with a walk before a ground out saw him advance to second. A wild pitch pushed him over to third base. A double by Yarbro tied the game up at 1-1 as Couillard-Rodak ran the 90 feet to home plate. Junior
Shane Pellegrino got a walk before a double steal saw Bears on second and third with just one out. Greene followed with the third walk of the inning to load the bases.
A wild pitch allowed all runners to advance one base, scoring Yarbro from third and giving the Bears the lead 2-1. Equale hit into a sacrifice fly to center that scored Pellegrino from third and added an insurance run for WashU, 3-1.
Senior
Brandon Buday got things started in the seventh inning with a one-out single to left. An out and a balk later saw Buday standing on second. Soong walked before Yarbro singled to right scoring Buday from second, adding a run to the Bears total, 4-1.
This time it was WashU who scored a run in the ninth. Couillard-Rodak got 90 feet from home after singling to left center and reaching third on a throwing error by the third baseman. He came in and scored when Soong was caught in a rundown. The Eagles were unable to score in the bottom of the frame as the Bears earned the split, 5-1.
Couillard-Rodak finished the game going three-for-four with two runs scored and a walk. Yarbro had his second multi-hit game with two RBIs and a run scored.
Senior
Sebastian Guzman got the win pitching the final 4.2 innings with two strikeouts and no runs scored.
WashU and Emory close out the regular season on Sunday, April 27 with a single game beginning at 11 a.m. ET.
