RV Baseball Splits Weekend Series With Loss To RV Emory On Sunday

ATLANTA, Ga. – For the second time in two days, RV Emory scored in the bottom of the ninth to escape with a win over the RV Washington University in St. Louis baseball team in the final regular season weekend of the season. The Eagles came back and scored three runs in the last frame to split the series with a 5-4 win on Sunday.

With one out in the top of the first, graduate Colter Couillard-Rodak reached on a fielding error and proceeded to steal second. Classmate Noah Reichman followed with a single through the right side that allowed Couillard-Rodak to come in and score to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead.

The second inning saw WashU add insurance runs to their total. A second fielding error by Emory to start off the inning allowed senior Braden Mazone to reach first before a single from junior Shane Pellegrino put runners on first and second. The third error of the game for the Eagles saw Mazone not only advance to third but score on the error and allowed first-year Cooper Greene to reach second and Pellegrino to take third.

With just one out, sophomore Anthony Equale singled to left, scoring Pellegrino from third and putting runners on the corners. In order to get an out, the Eagles threw down and tagged Equale out as he attempted to steal second, but it allowed Greene to come in and score and put WashU ahead 4-0.

The score remained the same until the seventh inning when Emory cut the WashU lead in half with a pair of runs on two singles, making it 4-2.

Still maintaining the 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth, the Bears saw their lead evaporate after a walk and a two-run home run over the fence in left as Emory tied the game up, 4-4. The Eagles followed with a double and single before WashU intentionally walked the batter to load the bases in hopes of inducing an infield play at home.

However, Emory got a single to center that scored the runner from third as they came back to claim the 5-4 victory over WashU.

Pellegrino led the Bears at the plate, going two-for-three with a run scored and a walk. Sophomore Parker Guthrie took the loss on the mound, finishing with three walks and a strikeout.

WashU now awaits the NCAA selection show on Monday, May 12 at 11 a.m. CT to find out if it has earned a spot in the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
