Stevenson Pitches Second Ever Complete Game No-No for No. 24 Baseball in Doubleheader Split With Maryville (Tenn.)

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – For only the second time in program history, the No. 24 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team has a complete game, no-hitter by a single pitcher. Sophomore Townsend Stevenson pitched all seven innings for the Bears in game one on Saturday against RV Maryville (Tenn.) in the 16-0 WashU victory.

The two teams played a doubleheader, with the Scots splitting the two games with a 7-1 win in game two.

Game 1: WashU 16, MC 0
Playing in its final non-conference weekend of the season, WashU opened the three-game series with Maryville with a win in game one of the doubleheader.

The Bears struck first in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runs. Senior Brandon Buday led off with a single to first base before stealing second. A single by junior Shane Pellegrino up the middle with two outs allowed Buday to race home and give WashU a 1-0 lead. After a Scots' fielding error allowed graduate Colter Couillard-Rodak to reach first and Pellegrino to make it around to third, first-year Cooper Greene hit a ball deep enough to left field that Pellegrino was able to score. This gave the Bears a 2-0 lead after one.

Senior Braden Mazone scored a single run for WashU in the second after reaching on a leadoff single to center and advancing to second on a groundout by Buday. A single to left by first-year Ryan Soong scored Mazone and gave the Bears a three-run lead.

Two more runs came for WashU in the third inning, putting the Bears ahead 5-0. Another single-run frame in the fourth gave the Bears a 6-0 lead after four innings.

The floodgates opened in the fifth. The Bears sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning, scoring 10 runs on nine hits. With one out, Greene singled up the middle and stole second. He came around and scored on a double by first-year Will Taigen to center field. After Mazone walked, first-year Kevin Stephens doubled to left-center, putting two runners in scoring position while scoring Taigen from second. Buday followed with a walk and Soong got his second hit of the game on a single up the middle that scored both Mazone and Stephens.

Graduate Noah Reichman joined the hitting action with a single to first to load the bases with one out. Pellegrino was next and reached on a fielder's choice and got to second on a throwing error by the second baseman, who was able to force out Reichman. Buday scored on the play with Soong reaching third and then scoring on the errant throw by the Scots.

The second error of the inning for Maryville allowed Greene, who singled, to reach second with Couillard-Rodak taking third and Pellegrino scoring, putting WashU ahead 13-0. Senior Justin Zachery substituted for Will Taigen and collected a single through the left side, scoring both Greene and Couillard-Rodak. After a single by sophomore Miles Birke to left allowed Zachery to reach second, Stephens hit his second double of the game down the right-field line, scoring Zachery and giving the Bears a 16-0 lead.

A three-up, three-down inning in the top of the sixth for the Scots was followed by another 1-2-3 inning for the visitors in the seventh. After the leadoff batter got only the second walk of the game, a double play put the Bears one out away from the win. A strikeout looking, the 12th strikeout for Stevenson in the game, ended the game and allowed WashU to achieve its first complete game, no-hitter in program history with a 16-0 shutout of the Scots.

The Bears collected a season-high 18 hits, led by Greene's 4-for-4 day at the plate. He finished with four singles, three runs scored, and an RBI. Not far behind him was Stephens's 3-for-4 afternoon with a pair of doubles, a single, three RBIs, and a run scored.

Stevenson picked up his first win of the season with the shutout. He struck out 12, walked just two, and became the second pitcher in program history with a complete game, no-hitter (the first with 10+ strikeouts), and the only pitcher in the UAA this season with a no-hitter.

Game 2: MC 7, WashU 1
While it was not a complete reversal of game one, the Scots were able to grab a split of the doubleheader with a 7-1 win in game two.

Maryville's first hit of the day allowed them to score their first run in the top of the first, putting them ahead 1-0. The Bears immediately answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame.

With one out, Soong singled to left-center, and Reichman singled to right-center to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Couillard-Rodak singled to deep left field, pushing Reichman to second and allowing Soong to tie the game, 1-1.

The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when the Scots scored three runs on four doubles in the inning, putting them ahead 4-1. The seventh was also friendly to Maryville as they garnered another four hits, including a double and three singles, which allowed two more runs to score and gave the Scots a five-run cushion going into the eighth.

Two singles and a wild pitch in the eighth allowed the Scots to add one more run to their total and gain a split of the doubleheader.

Mazone went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of singles, while Couillard-Rodak finished going 2-for-4, also with a pair of singles.

First-year Levi Gingerich took the loss in 5.1 innings pitched. He finished with six strikeouts, three walks, and two earned runs.

WashU and Maryville will both look to take the series as the teams play a single game on Sunday, with an updated start time of 2 p.m. due to the weather forecast in the morning. The game will also be the team's Buddy Up For Life game with several kids from the St. Louis program participating in a pre-game special activity.
