ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 24 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team wrapped up its final non-conference weekend of the regular season on Sunday afternoon as they picked up a 4-1 win over Maryville (Tenn.) to claim the weekend series with the Scots.
With the victory, the Bears are now 13-5 overall on the season with one non-conference game left.
With one out in the top of the first, the Scots got a batter hit by a pitch. The next batter reached on a fielding error that allowed runners on second and third. A single up the middle allowed the runner to come home and give the Scots a 1-0 lead.
The Bears answered immediately in the bottom of the inning. Senior
Brandon Buday led off for WashU with a single to the shortstop. First-year
Ryan Soong reached safely on a fielder's choice to give the Bears one out. A wild pitch later put Soong on second.
Graduate
Noah Reichman then stepped up to the plate and launched a home run at least 15 feet above the fence out in left-center field for a two-run home run, putting the Bears ahead 2-1.
After three straight scoreless innings for both teams, the Bears were able to add insurance to their total. Senior
Braden Mazone led off with a double down the right-field line. With one out, sophomore
Carson Cleage hit a single to the shortstop before a flyout to center by Stephens allowed Mazone to advance to third. Buday then stepped up and hit a double down the right-field line that allowed Mazone to score and give WashU a 3-1 lead.
After a one-two-three top of the sixth, Couillard-Rodak and Greene both earned walks to start the bottom of the frame. The Bears then put runners on second and third after Mazone successfully executed a sacrifice bunt. A walk by Pellegrino then loaded the bases before graduate
Will Yarbro was hit by a pitch that allowed Couillard-Rodak to score and put WashU ahead, 4-1.
WashU was able to get back-to-back three up, three down innings in the eighth and ninth to secure the win.
Buday went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI. While only collecting one hit, Reichman's home run in the bottom of the first gave the Bears the lead while he finished with the two RBIs and a run scored.
Senior
Hank Weiss picked up his first win of the season in his first start of 2025. He went 7.0 innings with nine strikeouts while allowing just two hits and one walk. Junior
Isaac Zhang came in to relieve Weiss in the eighth and pitched the final 2.0 innings, having two strikeouts while not allowing any base runners.
WashU will be back in action to wrap up its season-opening, 22-game home stand when they kick off UAA play and welcome Case Western Reserve to Kelly Field at Irv Utz Stadium on Friday, April 4. The series kicks off with a single game beginning at 3 p.m.
