ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team edged nearby Webster 84-79 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Bears are now 7-0 on the year.
 
Sophomore Connor May scored a career-high 28 points and dished out a career-high five assists to go with five rebounds.
 
Junior Ryan Cohen scored 18 points, grabbed four rebounds, and had two assists, while senior Calvin Kapral netted 17 points and pulled down three boards.
 
The Gorloks took an early 6-2 lead in the opening minutes and stretched it to 9-4 with 16:30 on the clock.
 
The Bears, however, scored five-straight points to tie things up with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first half. May had an offensive putback and then hit a shot from distance for a 9-9 game.
 
An and-one play from Webster's Sebastian Reed at 14:56 put the Gorloks ahead 12-9, and they would continue to hold a lead for the rest of the first half, building it up to as many as 17 points.
 
The Bears closed the deficit to one point at 11:13 following a dunk from junior Jake Davis, making it a 19-18 game.
 
Webster hit its first double-digit lead at 7:40 following a 9-2 run, including a four-point play from Jemard Sykes II, putting the Gorloks ahead 33-23.
 
WashU brought it down to a seven-point game several times, but in the final 2:49, Webster outscored the Bears 10-4, heading into the half with a 49-34 lead.
 
The second half was Webster's game until midway through when the Bears went on a 20-0 run to take back the lead.
 
With 10:34 on the clock, Kapral began the run with a layup, and Cohen followed with a 3-pointer. May hit a 3-pointer, and Kapral netted a pair of free throws. May scored on a layup followed by an and-one play that put the Bears ahead 71-69.
 
Senior Will Grudzinski drilled a shot from distance and May hit a jumper to conclude the run up seven, 76-69, with 4:28 remaining in regulation.
 
Four-straight points from Webster made it a three-point game, 76-73, but Kapral put in a jumper, and May hit another 3-pointer for an eight-point, 81-73 game.
 
The Gorloks scored five-straight points to cut WashU's lead to two points, 81-79, with just 51 seconds remaining. May closed out the game with a layup and the front end of a pair of free throws to secure the win for the Bears.
 
WashU shot 30-for-57 (52.6%) from the floor and 11-for-30 (36.7%) from 3-point range. The Bears edged Webster 35-29 on the boards.
 
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday as they take their first road trip of the season to Rose-Hulman for a 6:30 p.m. ET time. WashU will close out the 2025 slate on Thursday, Dec. 18, against Illinois Wesleyan at home at 2 p.m.
