TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team defeated Rose-Hulman 87-74 in its first road game of the 2025-26 season on Tuesday evening. The Bears are now 8-0 on the year.
Sophomore
Anthony Przybilla led the way for the Bears, netting 23 points, pulling down seven boards and dishing out three assists. Senior
Will Grudzinski scored 16 points and sophomore
Connor May scored 14 points and led the team with nine rebounds, along with three blocks, two steals and two assists. Senior
Calvin Kapral also reached double figures, scoring 12 points.
WashU took an early 5-0 lead as May put in a layup 12 seconds in and then drilled a 3-pointer at the 19:03 mark. Rose-Hulman, however, hit three 3-pointers in a row and a layup for an 11-5 lead at 17:13.
Przybilla laid one in followed by a 3-pointer from junior
Ryan Cohen to make it a one-point, 11-10 game at 16:16. After another RHIT layup, Cohen drained another 3-pointer and sophomore
Lleyton Thomas-Johnson put in a layup for a 15-13 Bears' lead.
The game was tied again seven more times in the first half (15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 28) and the lead continued to change as the clock ticked down.
With 5:05 remaining in the first half, WashU began an 8-0 run that put them ahead by four. Przybilla slammed one home, followed by the backend of a pair of free throws from senior
Yogi Oliff. Thomas-Johnson put in a layup off a steal from junior
Jake Davis and Przybilla hit three free throws to make it a 40-36 game.
Following a jumper from RHIT's Cole Pride, Przybilla laid one in and Davis had a layup for a six-point, 44-38 game with 1:21 left in the first. A layup from the Fightin' Engineers Joey Schmitz sent the Bears into halftime with a 44-40 edge.
After the Break, the Bears scored the first three points on a layup from Przybilla and a free throw from Grudzinski for a 47-40 lead. Over the next several minutes, WashU continued to hold a small lead, including a nine-point 54-45 edge at the 15:12 mark.
Following a layup from Davis and a 3-pointer from Thomas-Johnson at 13:30, the Bears took their first double-digit lead of the game, 59-48. Przybilla followed with a layup and a dunk for a 15-point, 63-48 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining.
After the 12-minute media timeout, Thomas-Johnson netted a pair of free throws and Kapral laid one in to extend WashU's advantage to 67-48 midway through the second half.
The Bears went on a 7-0 run that tipped them beyond the 20-point lead mark. Przybilla started it off with a layup and Kapral added a bucket. Grudzinski made it a 21-point, 76-55 game with a 3-pointer at the 6:46 mark. Przybilla followed with a steal and a dunk for a 23-point Bears' lead.
With 4:59 remaining, Grudzinski drained a shot from distance to give the Bears their largest lead of the game, 24-points, 83-59.
RHIT chipped away at WashU's lead, closing it to as few as 11 points with 1:44 remaining but a pair of free throws from Grudzinski closed it out with a 13-point, 87-74 Bears' win.
WashU shot 30-for-55 (54.5%) including 8-for-22 (36.4%) from 3-point range. The Bears had the 39-23 advantage on the boards over RHIT.
The Bears have one more game of the 2025 calendar year next Thursday, Dec. 18 against No. 18 Illinois Wesleyan at home at 2 p.m.
