WashU Football Closes Out Regular-Season With Win Over Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The (RV) Washington University in St. Louis closed out the regular-season slate with a 35-13 win over Augustana on the road. The Bears are 8-2 and finished their final CCIW season at 7-2.

WashU won the toss and deferred, putting the ball in Augustana's hands first. The Vikings made it to their own 34 before turning it over on downs.

On the Bears' first drive, junior quarterback Levi Moore hit junior Makael Carter for a 16-yard pass and first down at the 18. After a 16-yard loss, Moore ran for a 34-yard touchdown, and sophomore Matias Adrogue's kick was good, making it a 7-0 game at 11:42.

On Augustana's next drive, the Vikings turned it over on downs and the Bears punted the ball.

Augustana scored its first touchdown of the game to tie things up at 7-7. Quarterback Jimmy Makuh hit Mikey Brosnan for 13 yards and a first down at the Vikings' 46. Makuh then connected with Ethan Vrabec for a 40-yard pass to the one-yard line. Makuh finished it off with a one-yard touchdown run, and Jacob Garbett's kick was good.

On the ensuing kickoff, junior Drew Bomar returned the ball for 26 yards. Moore hit Carter for 19 yards and a first down at the 46. First-year Brayden Lewis ran for three yards followed by six yards, and Moore ran for seven yards and a first down at the 38. Moore connected with sophomore Lucas Blumenthal for nine yards.

Lewis had runs of six and four yards, respectively, and Ryan Bienstock ran for two yards. Moore hit Bienstock for five yards and a first down at the 12. Moore ran for nine yards before finishing things off with a three-yard touchdown run. Adrogue's kick was good for a 14-7 lead with 9:15 on the clock.

On the Vikings' next drive, they reached the 19 before junior Cosmo Guion intercepted the pass at the two-yard line.

After a scoreless third quarter on both sides, the Bears scored 21 points in the fourth quarter. WashU began its final drive of the third quarter with a six-yard rush from Lewis. Moore and Lewis connected for an eight-yard pass and a first down at the 43, and Moore ran for 23 yards in the final play of the third quarter.

Moore ran for 10 yards to open the fourth quarter, and junior Matthew Kinoshita ran for nine yards to the one-yard line. Moore ran the final yard for a touchdown, and Adrogue's kick was good for a 21-7 Bears' lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Augustana's Cole Schroeder returned the ball four yards before fumbling, which was recovered by Bomar at the 27.

WashU began its drive with a run of one yard by Kinoshita, and Bomar followed with an eight-yard run to the 18. Moore completed the drive with an 18-yard touchdown run, and Adrogue's kick was good, putting the Bears up 28-7.

After Augustana turned it over on downs, the Bears punted, setting up the Vikings for another touchdown. Makuh found Keegan Otte for two yards and then kept the ball for a one-yard run. Makuh found Adam Gallagher for a 50-yard touchdown run, but Garbett's kick was blocked by Aidan Hughes and recovered by Guion.

Augie's onside kick was run for a touchdown by junior Nathan Bluhm, and Adrogue's kick was good for a 35-13 Bears' lead.

The Bears tallied 292 yards of total offense (225 rushing, 67 passing).

Moore went 6-for-12 for 67 yards while also leading the rushing game with 140 yards on 13 carries and four touchdowns. Lewis totaled 63 yards on 13 carries, and Kinoshita had 34 yards on seven carries. Carter led the receivers with 35 yards on two catches.

Senior Salomon Dessalines had seven total tackles (4 solo, 3 assists) with 2.0 tackles for loss, while junior Joy Chane had seven total tackles (3 solo, 4 assists). Senior Ryan Schmadtke had six total tackles (5 solo, 1 assist) with one pass breakup.
