DECATUR, Ill. – The Washington University in St. Louis football team defeated Millikin 38-7 on Saturday afternoon on the road. The Bears are 6-2 overall with a 5-2 mark in CCIW play.Millikin won the toss and deferred, putting the ball in the Bears' hands for the first drive of the game. After reaching the 24, the ball was fumbled and recovered by Millikin. The Big Blue, however, were forced to punt on their ensuing drive, giving WashU possession again.
Junior
Matthew Kinoshita started the drive with a five-yard run, followed by seven yards from junior quarterback
Levi Moore. Moore then connected with junior
Drew Bomar for 12 yards and a first down at the 33, and Kinoshita picked up four more yards.
Moore hit first-year
Avery Lazard for nine yards and a first down at the 20, and then connected with Bomar for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Sophomore
Matias Adrogue's kick was good, putting the Bears up 7-0 with 8:16 on the clock in the first quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, Millikin's Kyle Corkill returned the ball for 19 yards, and the Bears were whistled for offside, putting the Big Blue at their own 33. Quarterback Sylas Gomez connected with Re'John Zeno for a three-yard pass before Zeno unleashed a 64-yard touchdown run. Bryson Newport's kick was good for a 7-7 score.
After multiple drives on each side resulted in a punt or a turnover on downs, Millikin attempted a 38-yard field goal in the second quarter at 7:05, but it was no good.
Following another punt for each team, the Bears put more points on the board with 1:12 remaining. Moore began the drive with a nine-yard pass to junior
Makael Carter, and then connected with Bomar for 14 yards and a first down at the 28. Senior
Fred Ware picked up three yards to put the Bears at the 25. Following two incomplete passes, Adrogue converted a 43-yard field goal to push WashU ahead 10-7.
Millikin began the second half with the ball but turned it over on downs. Moore began the drive for the Bears with a 10-yard pass to Bomar for a first down at the 24. He hit junior
Nathan Bluhm for 21 yards and then Moore ran the final three yards for a touchdown. Adrogue's kick was good, putting the Bears ahead 17-7 with 10:43 remaining in the third quarter.
After another Millikin punt, Kinoshita began the Bears' drive with a 16-yard run and a first down at the 34. First-year
Brayden Lewis ran for three yards and Moore connected with Carter for a 31-yard touchdown pass. Adrogue's kick was good, giving WashU a 24-7 lead with 8:06 left in the third.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, junior
Joy Chane intercepted Gomez's pass and returned it for 18 yards to the 30, setting the Bears up for another touchdown. On the first play of the drive, Moore launched a 30-yard touchdown pass to Lazard and Adrogue's kick was good, putting the Bears up 31-7 with 14:34 left in the fourth.
WashU's defense came up with another interception on the Big Blue's next drive as senior
Anthony Kuceba intercepted the ball and returned it to the 45.
The Bears scored their final touchdown with 34 seconds left on the game clock. Lewis recorded all the yards on the play, running for two, five, three, 13, 26, three, and six yards, respectively, before finishing it off with a one-yard touchdown run. Senior
Jacob Weinstein's kick was good for the 38-7 lead.
The Bears had 358 yards of total offense (214 passing, 144 rushing) while Millikin had 309 yards of total offense (131 passing, 178 rushing).
Moore went 16-for-29 for 214 yards with three touchdown passes. Lewis led the rushing game with 62 yards on nine attempts with a touchdown, while Ware had 51 yards on 12 rushes. Bomar led the receivers with 70 yards on six catches with a touchdown, while Carter had 50 yards on four catches with a touchdown and Lazard recorded 39 yards on two receptions with a touchdown.
Defensively, Chane had seven solo tackles with a tackle-for-loss, a sack, and one interception. Senior
Brady Willmer had seven tackles (6 solo, 1 assist) with one tackle-for-loss and senior
Salomon Dessalines had five tackles (3 solo, 2 assists).
The Bears have their final home game next Saturday, November 8, at 12 p.m. against North Park, which will be senior day.
