ATLANTA, Ga. – The No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team wrapped up its final road weekend of the regular season in style. The Bears used a first-half goal to lift themselves to a win over No. 2 Emory on Sunday in Atlanta.
WashU improves to 12-2 overall and 4-1 in the UAA.
Emory attempted to get things started quickly in the second minute with a shot that was saved by junior goalkeeper
Cal L'Hommedieu. The ensuing corner kick only yielded an off-target shot.
The Bears got their mark on the scoreboard in the 25th minute. After senior
Zach Susee lifted a corner kick into the box, junior
Ethan Wirtschafter grounded the ball and attempted to back-foot a goal. However, the Eagles' goalie made a diving save but could not corral the ball. First-year
Daniel Kochen immediately found it and fired past both the goalie and a defender from two yards out at 24:55 for the 1-0 lead.
Both teams took six shots in the first 45 minutes, with each keeper making a save.
In the second half, the Eagles tried to force the action with nine shots and used a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks, but both defenses held strong, preventing any goals in the last 45 minutes.
The Bears now have six shutouts on the season, including three UAA contests.
L'Hommedieu made a total of four saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal.
WashU will be back home on Saturday, Nov. 1, when it takes on NYU for the team's The Hidden Opponent (THO) contest. Kickoff with the Violets is scheduled for 11 a.m. from Francis Olympic Field.
