ROCHESTER, N.Y. – With temperatures much lower than what the No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team was used to on Friday evening, Rochester was able to score a pair of second-half goals to come back on their home field for a 3-2 victory over the Bears at Fauver Stadium.
WashU moves to 11-2 overall and 3-1 in the UAA.
The Bears got on the board first early in the contest in the 13th minute. Senior
Zach Susee's shot from about 10 yards out was deflected off the right post but found the foot of junior
Ethan Wirtschafter, who fired a goal in a narrow space in the far lower right corner of the goal at 12:24.
The Yellowjackets responded 12 minutes later after stealing the ball close to midfield and passing it up for a one-on-one and a one-touch goal at 24:40.
It didn't take long for the Bears to break the 1-1 tie as WashU stole the ball just on their half of the field, where first-year
Miles Newman lobbed the ball to right in front of the goal. A one-touch by classmate
Daniel Kochen went over the goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net at 27:18, putting the Bears ahead 2-1.
WashU maintained that lead going into the break.
Not long after action resumed, Rochester tied the contest up once again at 50:40 after deflecting a corner into the box, where it was back-heeled into the goal, making it 2-2.
The Yellowjackets then went up in the 72nd minute on an unassisted goal from about 23 yards out, making it 3-2. Rochester would hold onto the score while preventing the Bears from answering in the final 20 minutes for the 3-2 win over WashU.
Wirtschafter had the team-high in shots with three.
Junior
Cal L'Hommedieu made seven saves while playing all 90 minutes against the Yellowjackets.
WashU remains on the road and will take on No. 2 Emory on Sunday, Oct. 26 in Atlanta. Game time with the Eagles is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET.
