ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 11 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team routed RV Carnegie Mellon, 99-74, on Sunday afternoon in the Field House. With the win, the Bears improve to 12-2 on the season with a 2-1 mark in UAA play.
Senior
Hayden Doyle led all scorers with 26 points to go with four rebounds and a team-high four assists. Senior
Drake Kindsvater netted 19 points, pulled down seven boards, dished out two assists and recorded two steals.
Sophomore
Ryan Cohen put up 14 points while junior
Will Grudzinski had 11 points, six rebounds and three assists. First-year
Connor May was just shy of a double-double with nine points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
The Bears got things going quickly, going up 13-2 in the opening three minutes of play. After CMU tied the game at 2-2, the Bears went on an 11-0 run, starting with a layup from Doyle. Kindsvater hit a jumper and then 20 seconds later stole the ball, was fouled, and hit a pair of free throws. Doyle drilled a shot from distance and Kindsvater laid one for the 11-point lead at 17:04.
CMU made it an eight-point game, but the Bears scored six-straight in response. Grudzinski put in a layup and Doyle netted two buckets for a 21-7 lead at the 14:49 mark.
The Bears continued to dominate on the offensive end, leading by as many as 24 points in the third half. Midway through, Grudzinski netted a 3-pointer on a pass from sophomore Emmet Lawton and Doyle hit a jumper to put the Bears ahead 18 points, 35-17.
The Tartans brought the deficit down by 12 points on a 3-pointer from Justin Allen with 6:22 remaining, but WashU outscored them 17-7 as the clock ticked down.
Following Allen's bucket, Grudzinski drained a shot from distance and sophomore
George Gale put in back-to-back layups. May hit a jumper to break 50 points, putting the Bears ahead 50-29 with 4:03 left to play in the first half.
A 3-pointer from May with 49 seconds on the clock gave WashU it's largest lead yet, 24 points, making it a 58-34 game.
WashU tipped the scales past 30 points in the opening minutes of the second half. Kindsvater put in a layup following by a 3-pointer and junior
Calvin Kapral netted back-to-back layups, putting the Bears ahead 72-41 at the 16:17 mark.
The Bears continued to maintain a 25+ point lead as the clock ticked down. The closest Carnegie Mellon was able to get was 23 points on a Sam Andreottola 3-pointer at the 4:41 mark.
Defensively, WashU forced 10 turnovers, scoring 19 points as a result. As a team, the Bears outrebounded CMU 48-40. WashU shot 38-for-77 (49.4%) from the field and 12-for-29 (41%) from 3-point range.
The Bears hit the road for a two-game stretch next weekend, first traveling to face Rochester at 5:30 p.m. ET on Friday evening, followed by a 2 p.m. ET game on Sunday at Emory.
WashU is home again in the Field House on Friday, January 31 against Brandeis, which will serve as the Hardy Strong/Think Pink Game as well as alumni weekend.
