ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The No. 11 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team defeated the University Rochester, 99-82, on the road on Friday evening. The Bears are now 13-2 on the season with a 3-1 mark in conference play.
The Bears were led by senior
Hayden Doyle with 26 points, six rebounds and a game-high five assists. Junior
Will Grudzinski put up 20 points on 6-for-8 shooting from 3-point range and first-year
Connor May netted 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior
Drake Kindsvater scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
WashU started things off with an 8-0 run in the opening minutes of the game, starting with back-to-back 3-pointers from Doyle and sophomore
Ryan Cohen. Doyle followed with a layup off a steal from Cohen to give the Bears the eight-point lead.
Rochester's Tomiwa Adetosoye netted four-straight for the Yellowjackets to close the deficit to four points, 10-6, at the 15:11 mark and made it a three-point game less than two minutes later.
Midway through the first half and up just two points, WashU went on an 11-0 run, starting with an offensive putback from Kindsvater followed by a 3-pointer from Cohen. Junior
Calvin Kapral followed with an offensive putback and junior
Yogi Oliff had a bucket, giving the Bears their first double-digit lead of the game. A pair of free throws from sophomore
George Gale made it a 32-19 game with 7:22 on the clock.
With 2:20 remaining in the first half, May hit a layup to start what turned into a 10-0 run for WashU. Doyle netted a shot from distance before Grudzinski followed suit. Gale put in a bucket to conclude the run, giving the Bears a 46-29 lead with under one minute in the first half.
Doyle was fouled on a 3-pointer and scored the final three points of the first half, sending the Bears into halftime with a 49-31 lead.
The Yellowjackets opened the second half with an and-one play before the Bears scored six-straight, starting with a free throw from Kapral. Doyle followed with a layup and Grudzinski drained a 3-pointer to push the Bears past the 20-point lead threshold. 55-34.
Rochester went on its largest run of the game, 10 points, closing the Bears' lead to 11 points, 55-44, with 14:39 on the clock.
Up 12 with 11:43 on the clock, WashU netted eight-straight, starting with a 3-pointer from Grudzinski. Doyle hit a jumper and then a shot from distance to make it a 20-point, 74-54 contest with 9:28 remaining.
After going on an 11-0 run, Rochester cut the Bears' lead to 78-68 with 6:32 remaining. WashU netted four-straight on free throws from Oliff and a jumper from Doyle.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Grudzinski and Doyle extended WashU's lead to 19, 88-69, with 3:24 on the clock and a dunk from Grudzinski bumped the lead to 20 at 2:19.
WashU shot 36-for-63 from the floor and 15-for-29 from 3-point range. The Bears outrebounded Rochester 48-19 and scored 18 points off turnovers.
The Bears head to No. 2 Emory for a 2 p.m. ET game on Sunday afternoon.
