Second Half Goals Help Men's Soccer Shutout No. 14 Ohio Northern, 2-0

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The weather had cleared overnight for the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team just enough for a beautiful day on Saturday as the Bears shutout No. 14 Ohio Northern, 2-0, in their final non-conference match up of the season. The win improves WashU to 6-2-1 on the season while the Polar Bears fall to 5-2-2.

The first half was a stalemate with neither team finding the back of the net. Both teams took five shots while ONU led in corner kicks 3-1. Sophomore goalkeeper Owen Ross made one save in the first half.

It was nearly 30 minutes into the second half before the Bears broke through.

Sophomore Colin Link fired a shot at 71:42 that was blocked before classmate Ethan Wirtschafter nearly scored on a the rebound but was saved by the goalie before going out of bound. The save earned WashU a corner kick by junior Zach Susee. The ball was lobbed just enough to find the head of sophomore defender Quentin Gomez who headed in what became the game-winner at 72:17.

Not even three minutes later Susee took a pass around midfield and broke by a defender before firing a shot from the top of the box to the lower left corner for his fifth goal of the season at 75:03.

The WashU defense only allowed one more shot the rest of the game as the Bears held on for their first nationally ranked win of the season.

The Bears finished the contest with 14 shots to just seven for ONU while leading in shots on goal, 6-2.

Ross played all 90 minutes in goal, making two total saves.

WashU will kick off UAA conference play next Saturday, Oct. 5 when they travel to Emory for a 1:30 p.m. ET contest with the Eagles in Atlanta.
