WHEATON, Ill. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team returned to the road on Saturday looking to keep its three-game win streak intact. However, host Wheaton had other ideas as the Thunder scored from behind and while using a pair of second half goals to secure the 3-1 win over the Bears.
Sophomore Ethan Wirtschafter got WashU on the board first in the 14th minute. He stole the ball from a Thunder defender along the Wheaton goal line and rocketed a goal to the back corner past the goalie for the 1-0 lead.
The Thunder answered in the 23rd minute off a throw in that bounced it over to his teammate to found the bottom right of the goal, leveling the match up at 1-1.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Wheaton took the lead off a bounced around ball that found a foot at the top of the box for the goal and the 2-1 lead at 50:23. The Thunder scored an insurance goal at 71:04 off a long pass down the field before it was tapped in.
Sophomore Owen Ross played all 90 minutes in goal, making three saves.
WashU is back home in one week on Saturday, September 28 when it hosts the Polar Bears of No. 13 Ohio Northern. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Francis Olympic Field.
