ST. LOUIS, Mo. – It might have been the first half where they took most of their shots, but it was the second half where the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team made the most of the ones they took. They increased a one-goal halftime lead to a five goal difference by the time the final horn sounded on Saturday evening at Francis Olympic Field. The Bears took down in-town opponent Webster with a 7-2 victory, improving to 4-1-1 on the season.
It was not too long into the game before senior Eugene Heger put the Bears on the board first with a right footed goal in the sixth minute, 1-0.
Despite WashU controlling possession for the next 10 minutes neither team could find the back of the net until 14:27 when the Gorloks were able to shoot around a Bear defender to level the contest at 1-1. However, it did not take long for the Bears to answer as junior Zach Susee fired a shot from about 10 yards out on the right side that floated above the outstretched hands of the goalie but low enough to find the back of the net at 18:17, once again taking the lead 2-1.
Sophomore Colin Link added an insurance goal just over three minutes later at 21:29. It took nearly 20 minutes before the next goal was put on the board by either team with Webster getting within one at 40:23, 3-2 where the score remained heading into halftime.
The second half was all Bears. Sophomore Ethan Wirtschafter put WashU ahead by two once again in the 55th minute. In what would then seem like a defensive stalemate turned into an offensive barrage by the Bears with Wirtschafter scoring his second goal at 86:58, first-year Jamie Lee scoring his first career goal at 88:15, and sophomore Nik Avillo scoring with less than 10 seconds left in the game, providing WashU with the 7-2 win.
Sophomore Owen Ross secured his second win in as many games making one save while playing all 90 minutes in goal.
The Bears led Webster in shots (25-10), shots on goal (13-3), and corner kicks (5-2).
The win marked the 29th win for WashU in the all-time series with Gorloks dating back to 1984. The Bears have won the past eight meetings and 13 of the past 15. The last time Webster picked up a win over the Bears was on October 16, 2002.
