Men's Soccer Blanks Millikin in Season Opener

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team defeated Millikin, 5-0, to open the 2024 slate on Friday evening at Francis Olympic Field. The game marks head coach Andrew Bordelon's first victory at the helm of the Bears' program and the most goals scored in a season opener since 2010.
 
WashU was quick to get on the board as junior Zach Susee scored on a cross from sophomore Ethan Wirtschafter. Less than five minutes later it was the reverse, as Wirtschafter scored on a pass from Susee.
 
Up 2-0 after the half, sophomore Quentin Gomez netted his first of two goals, on a pass from Susee in the 58th minute.
 
In the 78th minute, sophomore Noah Cooney scored his first goal of the season to make it a 4-0 game and Gomez put in his second goal of the game in the 85th minute off a corner kick from Nik Avillo.
 
WashU out-shot Millikin 17-3 and had 13 corner kicks to the Big Blues' one. In goal, junior Adam Mallalieu made two saves to earn his first clean sheet of the year.
 
The Bears return home on Sunday afternoon with a 1:30 p.m. match against Rhodes.
