Six From Softball, Coaching Staff Earn All-UAA Recognition

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Six members of the Washington University in St. Louis softball team, along with the coaching staff, received All-University Athletic Association honors, the conference announced on Monday.
 
The Bears won two of the four major awards, with first-year Maria Brooks being named Rookie of the Year and the coaching staff of Casey Cromwell, Melissa "Skeeter" Gentile, Natasha Ramakrishnan and Holly Stoner earning Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
 
Along with the Rookie of the Year award, Brooks also earned a spot on the First Team, as did Natalia Pilpil and Sydney Schneider. Jamie Burgasser, Taylor Geluck, and Kennedy Grippo all earned a spot on the Second Team.
 
Brooks leads WashU's pitching staff with a 1.76 earned run average (ERA) and was tops in the UAA with a 2.16 ERA in conference play. Overall, she's notched a 9-2 win-loss record and a 5-1 mark in UAA games. Brooks has pitched nine complete games with six in the UAA and has 75.2 innings pitched including 45.1 in conference action. She ranks fourth in the UAA with 32 conference strikeouts and has not given up a homerun this season.
 
Pilpil posted a .412 batting average in conference play. She had 28 hits including 10 doubles and five homeruns, scored 11 runs and recorded 20 RBI while leading the team with 53 total bases. Her 10 doubles leads the UAA and she ranks second for hits. Pilpil had just one strikeout in all of conference play and only three on the season overall. Additionally, Pilpil was the definition of a utility player, playing at third, first, catcher and as the designated player while making just one error in conference play.
 
Schneider proved to be one of the top offensive threats for the Bears this season, recording an overall batting average of .434 and a conference batting average of .424. In UAA play, Schneider notched 25 hits with four doubles, three triples and two homeruns to go with 19 runs scored and 16 RBI. She stole 15 bases in 17 attempts, which is tops in the conference. In the field, Schneider made just one error.
 
Burgasser has an overall ERA of 1.90 and a conference ERA of 2.42 which ranks third in the UAA. She has a record of 7-3 overall with a 4-2 mark in conference play. Burgasser has pitched four complete games in six conference stats and has racked up 37.2 innings pitched. She has struck out 27 batters in UAA play and is tied for the team lead with 49 total on the season.
 
Geluck has an overall average of .358 with a .377 in UAA play. In conference play, she has notched 23 hits including nine doubles, one triple and two homeruns as well as 12 RBI and 14 runs scored. Her nine doubles ranks second in the UAA while her conference slugging percentage of .656 ranks ninth. In the field, mainly as shortstop, Geluck has made just one error in conference play.
 
Grippo leads the Bears with a .429 batting average in conference play. She has recorded 18 hits including five doubles as well as four RBI and seven run scored. Grippo has struck out just once and stolen three bases in four attempts. In the field at third base, Grippo had 14 putouts, 31 assists and just four errors to go with a double play.
 
In her second year at the helm for the Bears, Cromwell has guided the bears to a 26-10 record (thus far) with a 15-5 conference record as well as a second-place finish in the UAA. The 15 wins are the most for WashU in the UAA since the format changed to allow more conference games throughout the season.
 
The Bears close out the regular season on Thursday at Chicago with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. before finding out their NCAA Tournament fate next week.
