No. 6 WashU Softball Drops UAA Opener at No. 19 CWRU

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis dropped its UAA opener at No. 19 Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) on Friday afternoon, 4-1. The Bears are now 12-2-1 on the season with a 0-1 mark in UAA play.
 
The Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Karen Potts hit a solo homerun over the center field fence for a 1-0 lead. Elizabeth Berry drew a walk and Alaina Steffes drilled the second homer of the inning to left field, extending CWRU's lead to 3-0.
 
CWRU scored its final run in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Steffes drew a walk and Sierra Ejercito came on to run for her, stealing second. Camryn Mclelland doubled to right center, scoring Ejercito for the 4-0 lead.
 
WashU rallied for a run in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, senior Alexa Hanish reached on a fielder's choice and junior Kennedy Grippo drew a walk. Senior Jamie Cendana also drew a walk to load the bases. First-year Julia Sullo singled to short, scoring first-year Ava Peterson, who came on to run for Hanish.
 
Sullo was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Cendana went 1-for-1 with a walk while sophomore Harper Nix and junior Elena Locascio finished 1-for-3. First-year Jessi Szafoni took the loss in the circle, pitching 2.2 innings with five hits and four runs.
 
The Bears conclude the series with CWRU tomorrow with a doubleheader at 12/2 p.m. ET.
