No. 6 WashU Softball Picks Up Win At Trinity (TX)

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis softball team earned a win and a tie at Trinity (TX) on Friday afternoon. The Bears are now 12-1-1 on the season as they head into UAA play.
 
Game 1: WashU 6, Trinity (TX) 5
The Bears got on the board first, putting up two runs in the top of the first inning. First-year Julia Sullo drew a lead-off walk and stole second. Senior Sydney Schneider doubled down the left life, scoring Sullo for a 1-0 lead. Schneider advanced to third on a wild pitch and junior Kristina Donaldson singled and advanced to second. Junior Elena Locascio singled to center, scoring Donaldson to put the Bears ahead 2-0.
 
Trinity answered with a run in the bottom of the third. Ella Whitacre drew a lead-off walk and stole second. Hannah Boudreaux grounded out to second, pushing Whitacre to third. Carsyn Lee grounded out to second, scoring Whitacre for a 2-1 game.
 
In the top of the second, first-year Emmy May led off with a single down the left field line and advanced to second on a ground out from junior Maria Brooks. Sullo singled up the middle and May on an error. Sullo also went on to score on an error, making it a 4-1 game.
 
With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, sophomore Harper Nix doubled to left center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Donaldson reached base on a throwing error, scoring Nix to push WashU's advantage to 5-1.
 
Senior Alexa Hanish drew a lead-off walk to start the top of the fifth inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. May drew a walk and both runners moved up a base on a Sullo ground out. Hanish scored on a throwing error on a pick-off attempt, putting the Bears ahead 6-1.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Whitacre hit a one-out single up the middle for the Tigers. Boudreaux doubled down the right field line, scoring Whitacre to make it a 6-2 game.
 
Trinity rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Mariana Garcia hit a lead-off single to right center and Josephine Koelewyn singled up the middle to put runners on the corners. Following a WashU pitching change, Hayden DelToro hit a single to load the bases and Quincy Basarowich was hit by a pitch to score Meagan Brooks, who was on to run for Garcia.
 
Angela Baltzell singled, scoring Kristy Mendoza, who came on to run for Koelewyn. Whitacre reached base on a fielder's choice, loading the bases and Boudreaux hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Basarowich.
 
May finished 2-for-3 with one run scored and Nix went 1-for-2 with one run scored and a walk. Sullo was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
 
Brooks earned the win in the circle for her sixth of the year, pitching six innings with four hits, four runs and two strikeouts. First-year Jessi Szafoni earned her first save of the year, coming on to pitch one inning of relief with two hits and one run.
 
Game 2: WashU 3, Trinity (TX) 3
WashU started things off with a run in the top of the first inning. Sullo drew a lead-off walk and stole second base. Schneider grounded out to third, advancing Sullo to third. With two outs, junior Julia Nicholus struck out but reached base on a wild pitch, scoring Sullo for a 1-0 lead.
 
In the top of the second with one out, junior Kennedy Grippo singled up the middle. Senior Jamie Cendana was hit by a pitch and Sullo singled down the left field line, scoring Grippo. Cendana scored on an error on the play for a 3-0 Bears' lead.
 
The Tigers scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Whitacre hit a lead-off single up the middle and Boudreaux singled to right. Lee hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Whitacre for the first run of the inning. In the next at-bat, Hannah Flores drilled a homer to left, tying things up 3-3.
 
Due to a drop-off time of 3 p.m., the game was halted after six innings, resulting in the tie.
 
Sullo went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. May was 1-for-2 and Grippo finished 1-for-3 with on run scored.
 
In the circle, junior Hattie Bond went five innings with five hits, three runs and four strikeouts. Szafoni pitched one inning of relief, striking out three batters.
 
The Bears begin UAA play next weekend with a series at Case Western Reserve. The first game is Friday at 3 p.m. ET, followed by a 12/2 p.m. ET doubleheader on Saturday.
