WALTHAM, Mass. - The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team picked up a pair of University Athletic Association (UAA) wins against Brandeis University, Saturday, April 20. The Bears won by final scores of 13-1 and 8-3.Â
With the two important league victories, WashU's record jumps to 22-12-1 (6-4-1 UAA) on the year, while the Judges' record dipped to 5-25 (0-11 UAA).Â
Game One: WashU 13, Brandeis 1 (8 Innings)
WashU took game one by a final score of 13-1. After Brandeis scored the first run of the game, the Bears notched 13 unanswered runs.Â
The Bears belted 16 hits, compared to the Judges' six. Junior
Justin Zachery led the charge with his 4-for-5, two RBI day at the dish. Zachery also scored three runs.Â
Sophomore
Connor Lindsey drove in three, while Pellegrino, graduate student
Sam Polk, Zachery, and Buday each drove in a pair.Â
First year
Anderson Gomez has his best start of his young collegiate career. Gomez tallied seven innings pitched, his longest outing of his career by 2.2 innings. Gomez fanned five, did not allow a walk, and surrendered just six hits. Gomez secured the win (5-0) on the bump.Â
The Judges got on the board in the bottom of the first on a solo home run to stake the 1-0 lead.Â
WashU evened the score in the top of the second. Zachery roped a double to right, then Buday traded places with Zachery by securing a double of his own. Buday's two-bagger brought home Zachery. With one and a half innings in the books, the score was tied at 1-1.Â
The Bears exploded for five runs, on four hits, to grab the 6-1 lead in the top of the fifth. Senior

Evan Minarovic sent a single up the middle to allow
Clayton Miller to score. Minarovic got into scoring position on a wild pitch and then scored on a Polk RBI single to left to put the Bears up by two, 3-1.Â
Still in the fifth, Zachery grabbed a single to set up first and second, with two down. Digging into the box, Lindsey found a pitch to his liking and did not miss it. Lindsey welcomed his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot, to up WashU's lead to five, 6-1. Polk and Zachery both crossed the plate on Lindsey's round-tripper.Â
WashU added three runs, on just one hit, in the sixth to open up the 9-1 cushion. Following a fly out, Mauterer drew a walk, then scampered to second on wild pitch and stole third. First year
Carson Cleage got plunked by an offering then Minarovic walked to load the bases with two outs.Â
Polk grabbed an RBI on a free pass to put the score at 7-1, in favor of WashU. Zachery, continuing his scorching day at the plate, delivered a two out, two RBI, single to left as Minarovic and Polk raced home on the base knock. As the game progressed to the bottom of the sixth, WashU held the comfortable, 9-1, lead.Â
The Bears put the game out of reach for the Judges by registering a four run eighth to snag the 12-run, 13-1, cushion. In the frame, Buday hauled in an RBI on a bases loaded ground out, Pellegrino garnered a pair of RBI on a single to center, and first year
Anthony Equale doubled to left as he drove in a pair. Â
Sophomore
Josh Holt got the call out of the WashU bullpen to toss the eighth inning. Holt recorded a clean inning to preserve the Bears' commanding, 13-1, eight-inning, win over Brandeis.Â
Game Two: WashU 8, Brandeis 3Â
WashU took the night cap by a final score of 8-3.Â
Both teams were even in the hits department, with each squad registering six hits apiece.Â
Cleage and Minarovic each deposited two hits for the Bears. Minarovic added two RBI and two runs scored.Â
On the mound, junior
Will Henkel got the start. Henkel earned a no-decision with his four innings of work. Henkel struck out five, allowed five hits, and one run.Â
Junior
Hank Weiss had an impressive relief outing en route to securing the win (3-2). Weiss fired 4.1 innings while surrendering just one hit.Â
WashU got the scoring started in the second by recording three runs. Minarovic led off the frame with a walk, then Buday followed with a single to short. First year
Miles Birke reached on a fielding error, which allowed Minarovic to score on the play. After a wild pitch put runners at second and third with one out, Equale smoked a sacrifice fly to left, driving in Buday. Birke scored the third run of the game on a wild pitch. As the game moved to the bottom of the second, WashU held the three-run, 3-0, advantage.Â
Brandeis scored a run in the fourth on an RBI single to trim the Bears' lead to a pair, 3-1.Â
WashU answered with three runs in the fifth. Cleage connected on his third round-tripper of the season to give the Bears a 4-1 cushion. Following a pitching change, Zachery jogged to first after being hit by a pitch, then Minarovic doubled to right to set up second and third. Minarovic later scampered home on a Brandeis wild pitch. Buday put a ball in play and secured an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left. After four and a half innings, WashU welcomed the five-run, 6-1, cushion.Â
The Judges got one run back in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to put the score at 6-2, in favor of WashU.Â
Minarovic added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Mauterer and Minarovic reached on a walk and single, respectively, which eventually set up second and third. With two outs, Minarovic pounced on an offering and drove it up the middle for a two RBI single. Heading to the bottom of the ninth, WashU held the six-run, 8-2, lead.Â
Brandeis made things interesting late by scoring a run on a single. However,
Clayton Miller took over on the mound and got the final out, a strikeout, to record the 8-3 victory.
Clayton Miller picked up his sixth save of the season.Â
The two teams will wrap up the four-game set, tomorrow, Sunday, April 21. First pitch from Waltham High School is slated for 11 a.m. ET.Â
