Baseball Tallies Six in the Ninth to Earn Weekend Series Sweep of Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. - Facing a three-run deficit in the ninth inning, the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team exploded for six runs to grab the 9-6 win over Brandeis University, Sunday, April 21. With the win, WashU welcomed the University Athletic Association (UAA) weekend series sweep.  
 
With only four games left in the regular season, WashU owns a record of 23-12-1 (7-4-1 UAA). After the loss, Brandeis' record sits at 5-26 (0-12 UAA). 
 
Both teams accumulated nine hits in the series finale. Senior Harry Mauterer, senior Clayton Miller, and junior Brandon Buday each tallied two hits.  
 
Sophomore Shane Pellegrino, Clayton Miller, and Buday each recorded a pair of RBI. Mauterer also scored three runs for the Bears. 
 
WashU was on the receiving end of six walks, two of which were in the ninth. 
 
Sophomore Miles Quemuel-Labrador got the start on the mound. Quemuel-Labrador took the no-decision, tossing five innings and allowing eight hits. 
 
Clayton Miller secured the win (2-0) out the bullpen. Clayton Miller logged the final 3.2 innings and scattered just one hit. Clayton Miller fanned five in his impressive relief appearance. 
 
WashU struck first by scoring one run in the opening frame. Mauterer served a single to right then stole second to get himself into scoring position. The Bears scored a run on a Brandeis miscue as Mauterer crossed the plate. With a half inning in the books, the Bears held the 1-0 lead. 
 
In the fourth, WashU's first two hitters reached safely to generate second and third, with no outs. Mauterer led off the frame with a hit by pitch, then Clayton Miller torched a double to left. Stepping up to the plate, first year Carson Cleage drove in Mauterer on a ground out to short to push across the Bears' second run of the contest. Heading to the bottom of the fourth, WashU was ahead by a pair, 2-0. 
 
Brandeis scored six runs, on six hits, in the bottom of the sixth to grab the 6-2 advantage. 
 
In the top of the eighth, first year Anthony Equale singled to left, then Mauterer followed with a walk to put Bears on first and second. Following a strike out, Cleage drew a base on balls to load the bases. Equale raced home on a Brandeis wild pitch to trim WashU's deficit to three, 6-3, as the game progressed to the ninth. 
 
Looking for a comeback, the Bears did just that. Minarovic got himself on first via a hit by pitch then sophomore Connor Lindsey and Equale both walked to load the bases. With the bases full, and one out, Pellegrino laced a two RBI double to left, scoring Minarovic and senior Magnus Dunn, who pinch ran for Lindsey. With Pellegrino's key base knock, WashU found themselves down just one, 6-5. 
 
Mauterer earned a walk to once again load the bases. Clayton Miller drove a pitch to left for the go-ahead, two RBI double. On the hit, Equale and Pellegrino both scampered home to erase the deficit and to give WashU the one-run, 7-6, lead. 
 
Buday added two insurance runs on a single to the shortstop as the Bears took the three-run, 9-6, cushion into the bottom of the ninth. 
 
In the bottom of the ninth, Clayton Miller struck out the side to earn the series sweep by a final score of 9-6. 
 
The Bears are set to conclude the regular season with a four-game road trip to Cleveland, Ohio to tangle with No. 17 Case Western Reserve University, Friday-Sunday, April 26-28. The series will begin on Friday, April 26 with a single game inside of Nobby's Ballpark, starting at 3 p.m. ET.
