Guzman’s Gem Generates 5-1 Win for Baseball to Begin League Series Against Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. - Behind a gem on the mound from junior Sebastian Guzman, the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team won game one by the final score of 5-1 to kick off the four-game University Athletic Association (UAA) weekend series against Brandeis University, Friday, April 19.

With the UAA win, WashU's record improved to 20-12-1 (4-4-1 UAA) on the season, while the Judges' record fell to 5-23 (0-9 UAA).

Guzman notched the win (3-1) on the mound. Guzman fired eight innings of work, his longest outing of the year, while surrendering just three hits and one run. Guzman fanned seven and only allowed one walk.

WashU outhit the Judges by a final tally of 11-3. Senior Harry Mauterer, senior Clayton Miller, and first year Carson Cleage each recorded a pair of hits. Mauterer mustered two RBI for WashU.

The Bears broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth, scoring one run. Graduate student Evan Minarovic hauled in a single to right, then Cleage laced a double to center that short hopped the wall to set up second and third, with just one out. After being down in the count 0-2, senior Jack Miller fouled off several pitches before he drove in Minarovic on an RBI groundout to short. With three and a half innings in the books, WashU held the 1-0 lead.

WashU added to its lead in the fifth by scoring three runs. First year Miles Birke led off the frame with a sharp single to left center and later advanced to second on a senior Brandon Buday sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Shane Pellegrino followed with a single to right, then swiped second to set up second and third, with one out. Digging into the dish, Mauterer smoked a two RBI double and took third on a Judges fielding error. On the base knock, Birke and Pellegrino both scampered home to up the cushion to 3-0.

Still in the fifth, Clayton Miller brought home Mauterer on an RBI single to second to put the score at 4-0, in favor of the Bears. As the game progressed to the bottom of the fifth, WashU held the four-run, 4-0, cushion.

Brandeis got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to trim WashU's advantage to three, 4-1.

Guzman kept the score at 4-1 as the game went to the ninth.

Buday, who singled in the ninth, came around to score an unearned run as he stole third on an error from the Brandeis catcher to give the Bears a four-run, 5-1, cushion heading to the bottom on the ninth.

Junior Hank Weiss entered out of the bullpen and logged a scoreless ninth to secure the 5-1 UAA victory over the Judges.

The Bears and Judges will continue the weekend series, tomorrow, Saturday, April 20 with a double header. Due to predicted weather in the Boston area, the games will now be played at Waltham High School with game times of 2 p.m. ET and 5 p.m. ET.
