ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team dropped the final game of its four-game weekend, University Athletic Association (UAA) slate with Emory University, Sunday, April 14. The Eagles won by a final score of 11-4.
With the loss, WashU's record now sits at 19-12-1 (3-4-1 UAA) on the season, while Emory's record upped to 19-14-1 (6-5-1 UAA).
On the mound, sophomore
Miles Quemuel-Labrador (1-2) suffered the loss on the mound. Quemuel-Labrador tossed four frames and allowed just one hit.
Emory tallied four runs in the top of the first to generate the early 4-0 lead.
The Bears got an extra out in the bottom of the first and scored one run on the Eagles' miscue. With Mauterer on first, graduate student
Evan Minarovic reached on a throwing error by Emory to set up first and second with two outs. Polk then notched a line drive single to right center, which allowed Mauterer to score from second. After one inning of play, Emory held the 4-1 cushion.
Emory scored one in the fourth and four times in the fifth to open up the eight-run, 9-1, cushion.
With Dunn on third, and two out, in the bottom of the fifth, Dunn was awarded home as the Emory catcher picked up the ball with his mask. After the run crossed the plate, the score stood at 9-2, in favor of the Eagles.
WashU scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Dunn got things started with an infield single to short. Pellegrino followed with a double down the left field line that crossed the third base bag just fair, as Dunn scampered home on the base knock to put the score at 9-3. Mauterer then drew a walk to put Bears at first and second, with only one out. After a pitching change,
Clayton Miller recorded an infield single to load the bases with one down.
Still in the seventh, Minarovic stepped up to the dish and deposited a bloop RBI single to right to drive in Pellegrino. A twin killing ended WashU's seventh inning with Emory ahead by five, 9-4.
Emory manufactured one run in the eighth and one in the ninth to stake the 11-4 lead.
The Eagles bullpen shut the door on a WashU comeback and won the series finale by a final score of 11-4.
The Bears will travel to Boston, Mass. for a four-game, UAA, set with Brandeis University, Friday-Sunday, April 19-21. The series opener from Stein Diamond is scheduled for Friday, April 19 at 3 p.m. ET.
