Baseball Splits with Coe, Sees Win Streak Snapped at Five

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team split its doubleheader against Coe College, Sunday, February 25. WashU won game one by a final score of 6-3, then dropped the night cap by a final tally of 14-7. After today's action, the Bears' record stands at 5-1, while Coe's record sits at 1-2.

Game One: (RV) WashU 6, Coe 3

The Bears pitching staff shined in the contest, racking up 16 strikeouts on the afternoon.

In his first collegiate start, first year Townsend Stevenson tossed three innings, fanned seven, and did not allow a hit. Stevenson did surrender a trio of walks and one earned run.

WashU got the scoring started in the bottom of the second on a two RBI single by senior Magnus Dunn. After two quick outs in the second, graduate student Evan Minarovic ripped a single off of the pitcher's foot and senior Clayton Miller earned a base on balls. The two Bears later each advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch to set up second and third, with two gone. Dunn then stepped up to the plate and laced a two RBI single down the left field line as Minarovic and Miller crossed the plate safely to give WashU the early 2-0 lead.

Stevenson worked around a jam in the top of the third. Stevenson allowed two walks in the third, but ended the threat on a strikeout as the Bears held the 2-0 cushion heading to the bottom of the third.

Coe cut WashU's lead in half in the top of the fourth on a ground-rule double. Graduate student Matt Lopes came out of the bullpen and limited the damage to just one as he found himself in a runner on first and third, no out situation. Lopes got back-to-back outs on a foul out and a pick off, but a two-out double put a run on the board for the Kohawks. WashU took the 2-1 advantage into the bottom of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, WashU manufactured second and third, with one out, but could not push a run across as the Bears eventually stranded the bases loaded. After four innings of play, WashU held the 2-1 lead.

The Kohawks evened the score at 2-2 in the top of the fifth on a solo homerun to right center.

WashU answered with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of fifth. With runners on first and second, Mauterer executed a perfect sacrifice bunt and scampered to third on a Kohawk fielding error. On the play, senior Kaden Berhard and Pellegrino came around to cross the plate as WashU took the 4-2 advantage after five innings of play.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, Coe placed a double to right center that fell between three Bears to trim WashU's cushion to one, 4-3.

WashU responded with a pair of runs in the sixth to grab the 6-3 advantage. In the frame, after Miller reached via a hit by pitch, Buday barreled up a triple to left center as head coach Pat Bloom waved Miller home on the RBI triple. The next batter, Pellegrino, recorded a sacrifice fly to left which allowed Buday to score. The Bears clung to a three-run cushion after six innings.

Junior Hank Weiss, who relieved Lopes on the mound, struck out the side to get the Bears back to the dish.

Miller entered the game on the mound and shut the door to preserve the 6-3 victory.

Lopes took the win on the mound (2-0) and Miller earned his second save of the season.

Dunn paced WashU's offense with his 2-for-3 showing. Dunn notched a pair of RBI in the victory.

The Kowhawks registered three runs in the top of the fifth generate the 8-2 lead. Heading to the seventh inning stretch, Coe held the 10-2 cushion.
