Baseball Upended by Illinois Wesleyan in Twin Bill

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team hosted Illinois Wesleyan University, Saturday, March 3 for a doubleheader at Kelly Field and the Titans took both ends of the double dip by score of 9-5 and 7-0. With the setback, WashU's record sits at 5-3, while IWU's record climbed to 4-1. 
 
Game One - (RV) WashU 5 Illinois Wesleyan 9 
 
IWU outhit the Bears by a final tally of 13-10. 10 Bears recorded one hit in the contest. 
 
Junior Will Henkel took the loss (2-1) of the bump for WashU. Henkel logged four innings and allowed five hits. Sophomore Miles Quemuel-Labrador came out of the bullpen and threw four innings for the Bears. 
 
Illinois Wesleyan got on the board in the top of the first on a solo roundtripper to left to snag the early 1-0 advantage. 
 
The Titans manufactured another run in the second on an RBI ground out to take the 2-0 lead after one and a half innings. 
 
WashU stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the third. In the frame, junior Brandon Buday singled to short, while sophomore Shane Pellegrino and senior Kaden Bernhard each walked to set up the chance with only one gone. IWU got out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground out to keep the 2-0 lead. 
 
The Bears had another prime opportunity in the bottom of the fourth, manufacturing second and third, with two gone. However, a ground out to second thwarted the chance. After four innings of play, IWU held the 2-0 advantage. 
 
IWU tallied three unearned runs in the top of fifth to open up a 5-0 cushion. 
 
The contest stood at 9-0, in favor of the Titans, as the game progressed to the bottom of the ninth.  
 
Coming off the bench in the ninth inning, sophomore Connor Lindsey came up to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared the bases with a triple to right center to put the score at 9-3. Pellegrino then recorded another triple, this time to left center, as Lindsey jogged home. With Pellegrino on third, Bernhard notched an RBI ground out to first as Pellegrino raced home to cut the deficit to four, 9-5. 
 
However, IWU was able to shut the door to take game one by a final score of 9-5. 
 
Game Two - (RV) WashU 0, Illinois Wesleyan 7 
 
First year Townsend Stevenson got the start on the bump for the Bears. Stevenson tossed two and a third, allowing four runs. Out of the bullen, graduate student Matt Lopes recorded three and two thirds innings, surrendering three runs.  
 
The Titans outhit WashU by a final tally of 13-4. Buday, Pellegrino, junior Justin Zachery, and senior Clayton Miller each produced a hit for the Bears. 
 
IWU scored four runs in the top of the third to produce an early 4-0 cushion. 
 
The Titans put one run on the board in the fourth, fifth, and sixth frames to secure the 7-0 lead. 
 
WashU threatened in the bottom of eighth after a Zachery single and a Miller walk set up first and second with no one out. However, a foul out, a line out, and strike out ended the threat as the Titans held the 7-0 lead heading to the final frame. 
 
IWU's bullpen kept the Bears off the board as the Titans took the night cap by a final score of 7-0. 
 
WashU will conclude the three-game set with the Titans, tomorrow, Sunday, March with a single nine-inning contest. First pitch from Kelly Field is scheduled for 12 p.m.
