Down Goes No. 1! No. 9 Men’s Tennis Takes Down No. 1 Case Western Reserve; Punches Ticket to ITA National Indoors Championship

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. / SAPPINGTON, Mo. - The No. 9 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team turned in a hard-fought win against No. 1 Case Western Reserve University in the ITA National Indoors semifinals, Saturday, February 24. WashU took down the Spartans by a final score of 4-3 to punch its ticket to the championship match tomorrow morning. 
 
No. 9 WashU 4, No. 1 CWRU, 3: 
 
The Bears won two-of-three doubles matches to claim the one available doubles point. 
 
WashU's No. 1 doubles duo of sophomore Colin Fox and senior Gaurav Singh won their match, 6-3, over Anmay Devaraj and Sahil Dayal. 
 
Playing at No. 3 doubles, junior Pato Garcia Muriel and junior Scott Yamamoto defeated Michael Sutanto and Ansh Shah, 6-3. 
 
The No. 2 doubles team of graduate student Sergiu Celebidachi and senior Jared Phillips dropped its match, 4-6, to Vishwa Aduru and Diego Maza. 
 
In singles play, Phillips, playing at the No. 1 position, won 6-2, 6-4, over Aduru. 
 
Sophomore Colin Scruggs won a tight match at No. 4 singles, 7-5 (7-5), 2-6, 6-3 as he defeated Shah for a big point. 
 
Singh, playing at No. 5 singles, won a straight set match (6-3, 7-5) against Casey Hishinuma. 
 
Sophomore Eric Kuo fell at No. 2 singles (3-6, 5-7) to Sutanto. 
 
Celebidachi, at No. 3 singles, dropped a three-set decision (3-6, 6-3, 3-6) to Ajay Mahenthiran.  
 
Fox fell in straight sets (3-6, 4-6) against Maza at No. 6 singles. 
 
 
No. 9 WashU 3, Missouri Baptist, 4: 
 
The Bears that did not travel to ITA's took on Missouri Baptist University at Vetta Sunset Tennis Center. WashU dropped the dual match by a final score of 4-3. 
 
The Bears won two-of-three doubles matches to claim the one available doubles point. 
 
At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Case Fagan and senior Jeremy Ouyang dropped a close, 6-7, decision. 
 
Senior Henri Ohl and first year Nathan Tam, at No. 2 doubles, welcomed the 6-2 victory. 
 
Stefan Hester and first year Danny Radke, playing No. 3 doubles, cruised to the 6-1 win. 
 
Ouyang, at No. 1 singles, dropped his match, 5-7, 5-7. Ohl fell in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. 
 
Playing at No. 3 singles, Hester spun a straight set victory, 6-4, 6-1. 
 
At No. 4 singles, Fagan earned a win, 6-4, 6-3. 
 
Tam could not top Missouri Baptist at No. 5 singles as he fell in straight sets, 4-6, 2-6. 
 
Senior Akshay Saluja, at No. 6 singles, fell 5-7, 6-2 (8-10). 
 
The Bears will take on No. 6 Emory University, tomorrow, Sunday, February 25 in the 2024 ITA National Indoor championship. First serve from Top Seed Tennis Club is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. ET.
