No. 9 Men’s Tennis Advances to ITA National Indoors Semifinals with 4-3 Win Over No. 11 Sewanee

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. - The No. 9 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team began day one of the three-day ITA National Indoors with a 4-3 victory over No. 11 Sewanee, Friday, February 23. The match was highlighted by sophomore Colin Fox and senior Gaurav Singh taking down the No. 1 ranked doubles duo in Division III.  
 
With the eight-team bracket, the Bears punched its ticket to the semifinal match against top-ranked Case Western Reserve University, in a match that will take place tomorrow. 
 
Using the Division I/II scoring system, the Bears recorded the one available doubles point by winning two-of-three doubles matches. 
 
The No. 1 doubles duo of Fox and Singh defeated Jordan Theron and Quinn Wicklund, 6-4. Theron and Wicklund are currently ranked as the No. 1 doubles duo in NCAA Division III.  
 
Graduate student Sergiu Celebidachi and senior Jared Phillips dropped their match at No. 2 doubles, 5-7. 
 
Playing at No. 3 doubles, junior Scott Yamamoto and junior Pato Garcia Muriel ran away with the 6-2 victory over Gil Weston and Talman Ramsey. 
 
Phillips, at No. 1 singles, retired his match, trailing 2-6, 7-5, 4-2 against Theron. Theron is currently ranked as the No. 1 singles player in all of Division III. 
 
Sophomore Eric Kuo welcomed the 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles against Peyton Erck. 
 
Playing No. 3 singles, Celebidachi dropped his first set then came storming back to register the three-set, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 win.  
 
Sophomore Colin Scruggs fell in a close, three-set, match by set scores of 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. 
 
Singh spun a straight set win over Weston, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. 
 
Garcia Muriel lost his match at No. 6 singles against Henry Hyden, 6-4, 6-2. 
 
The Bears will continue play in the ITA National Indoors, tomorrow, Saturday, February 24. WashU will play No. 1 Case Western Reserve University at 2 p.m. ET in the semifinal match. The Bears that did not make the trip to Kentucky will take on Missouri Baptist University, tomorrow, February 24 at Vetta Sunset Tennis Center. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
