ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The RV Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team edged Brandeis 56-53 on Sunday afternoon. The Bears improve to 17-7 overall and 7-6 in UAA play.
Junior
Kyle Beedon led the Bears with 13 points while junior
Hayden Doyle netted 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out two assists. For the second game in a row, sophomore
Yogi Oliff pulled down 17 rebounds to go with eight points and six assists.
Beedon got things going for the Bears with a 3-pointer at the 18:12 mark. Brandeis followed with four-straight to take the 4-3 edge but Doyle answered quickly with a 3-pointer to take a 6-4 lead at 15:58.
Five-straight gave the Judges a slight edge but a 3-pointer from first-year
Ryan Cohen tied the game at 9-9 with 12:40 on the clock. A jumper from sophomore
Calvin Kapral and a 3-pointer from sophomore
Will Grudzinski gave the Bears a five-point, 14-9 lead midway through the first half.
Brandeis went on a 7-0 run to take a 16-14 lead over WashU but the Bears responded with four-straight points from first-year
Emmett Lawton and Kapral to go up 18-16.
After Brandeis tied the game at 18 apiece, WashU went on a 12-0 run, starting with a back-to-back jumpers from Beedon and Oliff. Kapral put in a bucket followed by a 3-pointer from Doyle. Oliff closed out the run with an offensive putback to make it an 11-point, 29-18 game with 2:25 remaining in the first half.
The Judges netted four-straight points and the Bears ended the half with a pair of free throws from Oliff to make go into the break with a 31-22 lead.
WashU came out of the halftime to score seven in a row. Kapral hit the front end of a pair of free throws and Beedon drilled a longball and hit a jumper for the 37-22 lead. The Bears went up 15, 42-27 on a layup from senior
Jabari Chiphe with 13:54 on the clock.
The Bears took their largest lead of the game, 17 points, at the 11:33 mark as Doyle drilled a 3-pointer to make it a 47-30 game.
Starting at 8:41, the Judges went on an 9-2 run to cut the Bears' lead down to 49-43. Brandeis went on another run, 8-0, to make it a one-point, 54-53 game with just 29 seconds remaining.
Doyle closed out the game with a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining and the Bears' defense held off the 3-pointer attempt to hold on to the win.
WashU closes out the regular-season next Saturday with a 3 p.m. game against Chicago. Prior to the game, the Bears will honor seniors
