Men's Basketball Edges Chicago in Regular-Season Finale

St. Louis, Mo. – The (RV) Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 61-58 win over the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon. The Bears conclude the regular season with a 18-7 record with an 8-6 mark in UAA play.
 
A trio of Bears reached double-figures, led by junior Hayden Doyle and sophomore Calvin Kapral each needed 12 points to go with three rebounds while junior Kyle Beedon had 10 points. Sophomore Yogi Oliff had a team-high seven rebounds and six assists.
 
Prior to the game, the Bears honored their two seniors – Jabari Chiphe and Chidera Nwokolo as well as All-Purpose Personnel Sarah Ambrose. Chiphe was also presented the Robert L. Pearce award, which is an award established to honor and recognize special characteristics of commitment and perseverance.
 
WashU got off to a slow start, trailing 9-0 in the first four minutes. The Bears broke the drought at the 15:46 mark with a jumper from Doyle. Doyle converted again a minute later and first-year Ryan Cohen drilled a fastbreak 3-pointer off a Jabari Chiphe steal to make it a 9-7 game.
 
The Maroons hit two more buckets to go back up by six points, 13-7 but the Bears had four-straight from first-year Jake Davis and Chiphe to trail 13-11 with 11:23 on the clock.
 
A 3-pointer from sophomore Will Grudzinski at the 10:14 mark made it a one-point, 15-14 game. After exchanging buckets for the next several minutes, a layup from Chiphe with 4:48 on the clock tied things at 22 apiece.
 
Doyle netted a longball to tie the game again at 25 and the Bears took their first lead of the game with 1:45 remaining following back-to-back layups from Kapral. A steal and a 3-pointer from Chicago's Arrish Bhandal put Chicago up 31-29 at the half.
 
The Bears came out of the break to take a 32-31 lead following an offensive rebound from Oliff that lead to a 3-pointer from Doyle.
 
Chicago went up 35-32 but a 3-pointer from Grudzinski and a layup from Oliff WashU ahead again, 37-35, at the 16:56 mark. The Bears continued to add to the small lead as Davis laid one in and Beedon hit the backend of a pair of free throws for a 40-35 lead.
 
The Maroons tied things up at 40 apiece and the game went on to be tied at 42 and 44. Chicago went up by as many as five over the next several minutes, making it a 50-45 game at the 9:52 mark.
 
A 3-pointer from Davis and a layup from Beedon gave the Bears at 55-53 lead with 7:29 on the clock but the Maroons quickly took back the lead until the final minute of play.
 
Doyle netted a jumper with 47 seconds on the clock and Beedon put in a layup at the 17 second mark. The Bears defense came up with a big forced turnover on the final Chicago play to end the game with the win.
 
Statistically, the teams were nearly even as the Bears shot 24-for-59 (40.7%) while Chicago was 25-for-53 (47.2%). WashU bested the Maroons from 3-point range, shooting 8-for-25 (32%) compared to Chicago's 5-for-21 (23.8%). Both teams had 29 rebounds apiece.

The Bears now await their NCAA Tournament fate. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show airs at 12 p.m. CT on ncaa.com on Monday.
