CONWAY, Ark. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team, who is currently receiving votes in the latest d3baseball.com/NCBWA top-25 national poll, took both ends of a double dip against Hendrix College, Sunday, February 18. The Bears ran away with the first game by a final score of 12-0 then scored eight unanswered to grab the night cap, 8-3.
With the doubleheader sweep, WashU's record remains perfect, at 3-0, while Hendrix's record fell to 3-2 on the young season.
Game One: (RV) WashU 12, Hendrix 0
In the first game of the day, junior
Will Henkel tossed 5.1 innings of no-hit baseball in his first appearance of his junior campaign. Henkel got the win (1-0) and logged six innings, struck out five, and surrendered just one hit.
WashU threatened in the top of the first, but could not crack the scoreboard. Buday led off the game with a hit by pitch and advanced to third on a ground out and a passed ball. The Warriors were able to strand Buday on third with a ground out to end the top half of the first.
After Hendrix put a runner on first, taking advantage of a WashU miscue, Henkel helped himself out by picking off a Warrior at first base to keep the game scoreless after one inning of play.
The Bears tallied a pair of runs in the third to snag the early, 2-0, advantage. After Buday walked, Pellegrino reached on an error to set up first and second with two outs. Continuing where he left off yesterday, Bernhard found a barrel on a Warrior offering and deposited a two-run double to right. The base knock allowed Buday and Pellegrino to scamper home to give WashU the 2-0 lead.
Henkel, who had total command of his arsenal, kept the Warrior offense at bay, allowing the Bears offense to produce some run support. After a shutdown bottom half of the third, WashU padded its lead in the fourth by adding three runs to take the 5-0 cushion.
With junior
Braden Mazone on third and senior
Harry Mauterer on first, with no one out, senior
Clayton Miller did his job and manufactured a sacrifice fly to left as Mazone crossed the plate to give WashU the 3-0 lead. After a Buday single, Pellegrino cashed in with a two RBI double to left, bringing home Buday and Mauterer. With three and half innings in the books, the Bears welcomed the 5-0 lead.
WashU earned four runs, on three hits, in the sixth to race out to the commanding 9-0 lead. In the frame, Pellegrino recorded his second two RBI base hit of the game and Bernhard scratched a two-out, two RBI, base hit through the right side to account for WashU's four runs.
A Warrior single, with one out in the sixth, broke up Henkel's no-hit bid.
The Bears generated a run in the top of the seventh to grab the 10-0 lead. Graduate student
Evan Minarovic brought home Miller on a single.
In the eighth, Pellegrino led off the frame on a hit by pitch. Pellegrino then stole second and advanced to third on a flyball. Junior
Justin Zachery recorded an RBI single as Pellegrino scored to push WashU's cushion to 11-0. Zachery then stole second to put himself in scoring position with Mazone at the dish.
Mazone found a barrel and laced a single to right as Zachery touched the plate to expand WashU's advantage to a dozen.
First year
Townsend Stevenson came out of the bullpen and fired two scoreless frames in his collegiate debut.
The Bears went on to win by the final score of 12-0.
Game Two (Scheduled Seven-Inning Game): (RV) WashU 8, Hendrix 3
In the nightcap, junior
Sebastian Guzman got the ball on the mound. Guzman took a no-decision, firing 3.1 innings in his first start of the season. Guzman allowed just two hits, but surrendered three runs (two earned).
First year
Anderson Gomez shut the door out of the bullpen, seeing his first collegiate win (1-0) with his 1.2 innings of scoreless ball. Gomez was scratched for one hit and fanned one.
Junior
Hank Weiss followed out of the bullpen and finished the contest. Weiss struck out four in his first appearance of the year.
Offensively, WashU's offense generated eight hits. Buday and junior
Dax Braemer each recorded two hits for the Bears. Braemer and Pellegrino each knocked in a pair of runs.
WashU showed its discipline at the plate, earning 11 walks in the contest.
The Bears scored one run in the first inning after Buday, Pellegrino, and Bernhard each reached base safely to begin the contest. After an out was recorded, Mauterer got WashU on the board with a sacrifice fly to right as Buday ran home to give the Bears the early 1-0 lead.
However, the Warriors responded with a three-run bottom of the second to take the 3-1 advantage.
WashU then evened the score in the third on a two-run single from Braemer. In the frame, the Bears took advantage of three walks to load the bases. Hendrix limited the damage on a ground out to end the top of the third.
The Warriors notched a leadoff double to begin the bottom of the third. Guzman was able to get out of the inning unscathed with a sacrifice bunt, a fielder's choice, and a well-timed strikeout. The game remained tied after three innings.
WashU took the lead, 4-3, in the fourth. Buday recorded a double and later advanced to third on a ground out. Buday eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Gomez kept the Warriors offense in check for his five outs as the Bears held the 4-3 lead in the sixth.
The Bears opened the game up in the top of the seventh as WashU scored four times to create some breathing room as the score stood at 8-3 in favor of the Bears. In the seventh, Minarovic, senior
Magnus Dunn, and Pellegrino each earned at least one RBI.
After a pair of walks to begin the bottom of the seventh, Weiss worked around the jam with back-to-back strikeouts and a harmless flyball to center to take the scheduled seven-inning game by a final score of 8-3.
The Bears will host its first series of the season, Saturday-Sunday, February 24-25, with a three-game set against Coe College. The two will play a single game at 2 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a double-dip on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. at Kelly Field.
