ATLANTA, Ga. – The No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team opened up UAA play with a 2-1 win over No. 13 Emory on Saturday morning. The Bears are now 11-0-1 on the year with a 1-0 record in conference play.
The game was scoreless for the first 36 minutes until first-year
Olivia Clemons broke the deadlock with her team and conference-leading 11
th goal of the season. Clemons controlled the ball just past midfield and dribbled it down the center, sending it home into left corner of the net past a diving Emory goalkeeper for the 1-0 WashU lead.
The Bears put away what would ultimately be the game-winner in the 76
th minute as sophomore
Madi Foley scored on an assist from senior
Gaelen Clayton. Following an unsuccessful Emory corner kick, WashU took it down the other end where Clayton had a strong cross that slipped through the goalkeeper's hands, falling to the feet of Foley who was there to finish it and make it a 2-0 lead.
In the 83
rd minute, Emory scored its lone goal of the game as Kaitlyn Nimmer scored on a pass from Chayse Corfman.
The teams were relatively even in the box score, as WashU had 13 shots with six on goal to Emory's 12 with four on goal. The Bears also edged the Eagles in corner kicks, 8-5.
Clemons led the offense, recording four shots with two on goal, along with the first goal of the game.
Graduate goalkeeper
Sidney Conner made three saves on the day for the Bears. Conner made her first save of the day in the sixth minute on a Mikayla Camp shot and another save in the 17
th minute on a Katie Hungness ball. She made the final save of the game in the 71
st minute on an Alexandra Burtis-Wyant shot.
The Bears play their final non-conference match of the regular-season tomorrow at 11 a.m. ET at Piedmont.
