ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team picked up a crucial UAA win on Friday afternoon, defeating No. 3 Carnegie Mellon University, 3-0. The Bears improve to 15-0-1 on the year with a 4-0 conference record, taking control of first place in the UAA.
The Bears put the first goal of the game on the board in the 14
th minute as sophomore
Sophie Viscovich took a long cross from junior
Ella Koleno and fired it into the upper left corner.
First-year forward
Olivia Clemons scored her first of two goals in the 31
st minute, dribbling around her defender and sending the ball past a diving Carnegie Mellon goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead.
Clemons struck again just over 10 minutes later in the 42
nd minute, taking a ball from sophomore
Madi Foley and dribbling around a defender before finishing things off for the 3-0 Bears' advantage.
Clemons' two goals mark her 15
th and 16
th, respectively, which leads the team and the conference.
The Bears tallied six total shots with five on goal and the Tartans had five with two on goal. Clemons led with four shots including three on goal.
Graduate goalkeeper
Sidney Conner finished with two saves, both in the second half. She made the first save in the 58
th minute on a Maria Askounis shot and followed with another in the 67
th minute on an Audrey Bianco ball.
The Bears are home again on Sunday morning with a game against Case Western Reserve University at 11 a.m. The Spartans are currently receiving votes in the national poll. The game marks Neighbors' Day/Youth Day.
