ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Playing in its final home weekend of the regular season, the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team took on Carnegie Mellon on Friday night at Francis Olympic Field. The Bears and Tartans played 90 minutes without a goal being scored, ending in a tie, 0-0.
The first half saw both teams limit the other in total shots with neither team taking more than five attempts. CMU controlled the ball for most of the first 45 minutes but was unable to get any ball past the Bears' defense.
The second half was more exciting for WashU as the ball was more often than not in the attacking half of the field. However, much like the first half for the Tartans, the Bears were not able to get past the defense. The CMU goalie however had to make several diving saves in the final 15 minutes to preserve the draw with WashU, 0-0.
Graduate Owen Culver and sophomore Colin Link each had four shots of the 16 total taken by the Bears. In the end, six different WashU players attempted to find the back of the net in the contest.
Sophomore Cal L'Hommedieu played all 90 minutes in net for the Bears, making five saves.
As a team, WashU had more shots than the Tartans (16-6), including a 12-2 advantage in the second half. The Bears also led in shots on goal, 7-5.
WashU returns to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 27 when it plays its final regular season home game against Case Western Reserve. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Prior to the contest, the Bears will honor its seniors and graduate students for their time and dedication to the program with a special ceremony.
