ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Playing in its final home game of the regular season, the Washington University men's soccer team honored its seniors and graduate students prior to its contest with Case Western Reserve on Sunday afternoon at Francis Olympic Field. After a scoreless first half, both teams were able to score in the second to earn a draw, 1-1.
The Bears honored seniors Landon Green, Joseph Hipskind, Eugene Heger, and Davin Hickman-Chow along with graduate students Jesus Tadeo, Cole Hutson, and Owen Culver with a special ceremony before the contest with the Spartans.
The first half saw WashU control the ball on their offensive side of the field for a majority of the first 45 minutes. The Bears out shot CWRU 7-1 in during that stretch while also taking four corner kicks. However, neither WashU nor the Spartans were able to find the back of the net in the opening half.
It took over 30 minutes into the second half before the Bears were able to break through the stalemate. Junior Tyler Allred found classmate Nathan Szpak up the right side of the field where Szpak found Green in the box, who fired a goal passed a diving goalie keeper, giving the Bears the 1-0 lead in the 78th minute.
When it looked like WashU would be able to keep the ball away from its own goal, the Spartans intercepted a pass deep and tapped it in front of the goal where they hit a cross-box goal to tie the score up in the 87th minute. With neither team able to repeat their offensive shots in the final few minutes, the contest ended in a 1-1 draw.
In addition to Green's goal, Tadeo led the Bears in shots with three attempts.
Sophomore Cal L'Hommedieu played all 90 minutes in goal, making two saves.
WashU is on the road for its final two games of the regular season, beginning with a visit to Rochester on Sunday, Nov. 3 for a 1:30 start time at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
