ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Bear Beats is a weekly release that will be posted on Mondays to provide a look back at the past week of action and to preview the events for the upcoming week. The 17th edition will feature men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's track and field.
NOTE: Due to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 15, which is a WashU observed holiday, the 18th edition will be posted on Tuesday, January 16
A look in the rear-view mirror (events from January 2 – January 7):
RV Women's Basketball:
- WashU began University Athletic Association action with a road contest against Chicago, who is receiving votes in the latest top-25 poll, Saturday, January 6
- The Bears used a timely 12-0 run in the fourth quarter to take down the Maroons by a final score of 79-69
- The win marked WashU's fifth straight victory
- WashU's record now sits at 8-4 (1-0 UAA)
- Senior Jessica Brooks turned in a team-high 18 points in the victory
- Brooks also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds
- First-year Sidney Rogers added 15 points and five rebounds
- Sophomore Jordan Rich, who nailed back-to-back threes late in the fourth quarter, finished with 10 points
- First year Lexy Harris notched nine points and six rebounds

No. 16 Men's Basketball:
- The No. 16 Bears dropped a heartbreaker to Chicago, 69-68, to open up UAA play, Saturday, January 6
- The Maroons connected on two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to seal the victory
- With the setback, WashU's record now stands at 10-2 (0-1 UAA)
- Junior Drake Kindsvater led the Bears with 18 points and seven rebounds
- Junior Hayden Doyle finished with 14 points and four assists
- Sophomore Calvin Kapral secured 12 points
- Sophomore Yogi Oliff was credited with a game-high five assists

On the horizon:
Women's Track and Field:
- The women's track and field team will return to competition this Friday
- The Bears will travel to Terre Haute, Ind. to participate in Rose-Hulman's meet, Friday, January 12
- The meet will take place in the SRC Fieldhouse
Men's Track and Field:
- For the first time in over a month, WashU will return to the track on Friday, January 12
- The Bears are set to trek to Terre Haute, Ind. to compete in Rose-Hulman's meet at the SRC Fieldhouse
Men's Swimming and Diving:
- WashU's men's swimming and diving program will return to the pool for the first time in the calendar year this weekend
- The Bears will host University of Missouri – St. Louis on Friday, January 12
- Action from Millstone Pool is set to start at 5 p.m.

- WashU will then travel to Lebanon, Ill. to square off with McKendree University, Saturday, January 13
- Saturday's meet is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. inside of the McKendree Metro Rec Plex

Women's Swimming and Diving:
- The women's swimming and diving team will open the 2024 slate with a pair of meets this weekend
- The team will host University of Missouri – St. Louis on Friday, January 12
- The dual meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

- WashU will complete the busy weekend by traveling to Lebanon, Ill. for a contest against McKendree, Saturday, January 13
- Saturday's meet is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. inside of the McKendree Metro Rec Plex

Women's Basketball:
- The Bears will host a pair of UAA contests this weekend
- WashU will welcome Emory University to the Field House on Friday, January 12
- Tip off from St. Louis is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
- The Bears will then play host to University of Rochester on Sunday, January 14
- Game time is set for 2 p.m.

Men's Basketball:
- WashU will also host a pair of key UAA matchups this weekend
- The Bears are set to take on Emory, Friday, January 12
- The game, which will serve as the backend of a double header with the women's basketball team, is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
- WashU will then take on Rochester, Sunday, January 14
- Tip off from the Field House is scheduled for 12 p.m.
