No. 16 Men's Basketball Suffers Heartbreaker in UAA Opener at Chicago

Chicago, Ill. – The No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team lost a 69-68 heartbreaker to Chicago on Saturday afternoon in the UAA opener. The Bears are now 10-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
 
The Bears had a hot start, taking a 10-3 lead in the opening four minutes of play. Thirty seconds in, junior Drake Kindsvater netted a shot from distance for a 3-0 WashU edge. After Chicago tied things up a minute later, Kindsvater put in a layup. Sophomore Calvin Kapral had back-to-back layups, including an offensive putback and Kindsvater hit the fronted of a pair of free throws for the seven-point edge.
 
The Maroons hit a shot from distance, but Kindsvater answered with a 3-pointer to keep it a seven-point, 13-6 game with 15:25 on the clock.
 
Chicago went on a 9-0 run to knot the game at 13 apiece and then take a 15-13 lead with 13:19 remaining in the first half.
 
The Bears then went on a 9-0 run of their own, starting with a 3-pointer from junior Kyle Beedon. First-year Lucas Vogel stole the ball and hit a fastbreak layup and junior Hayden Doyle hit a jumper in the paint. First-year Jake Davis closed out the run with a jumper, making it a 22-15 game with just under 10 minutes left in the first half.
 
Back-to-back Chicago layups made it a three-point game but sophomore Will Grudzinski drained a 3-pointer to extend it back to six points, 25-19.
 
Six-straight from the Maroons tied the game at 25 with 6:11 on the clock but four points from Doyle and Vogel gave the Bears a slight 29-25 edge.
 
Three free throws from Chicago's Thomas Kurowski closed the Bears' lead to 29-28 with 3:20 remaining and the Maroons ultimately tied it at 31 with 47 seconds on the clock. A jumper from Joe Berry with 11 seconds on the clock sent Chicago into the half with a 33-31 advantage.
 
The Bears came out of the half to score the first three points on a layup from Kapral as well as a steal and fastbreak from sophomore Yogi Oliff and a free throw from Oliff.
 
Through the next two-and-a-half minutes, the game was tied three times at 37, 39 and 41. The Bears then went on a 6-0 run to go up 47-41. Beedon hit a layup following a steal from Oliff and Kindsvater had an offensive putback. Kindsvater added another layup to give the Bears the six-point edge.
 
Chicago's Berry netted a pair of free throws to tie things up at 48 with 9:35 on the clock and Eamonn Kenah hit a 3-pointer to give the Maroon's a 51-48 edge.
 
Back-to-back layups from Doyle gave the Bears a 52-51 advantage but a jumper from Jackson Piotrowski put Chicago ahead again.
 
The teams exchanged baskets and the lead throughout the final seven minutes. With 13 seconds on the clock, Kenah hit a pair of free throw to give the Maroons a 69-68 lead and a Bears' final-second layup was no good, giving Chicago the win.
 
Kindsvater had 18 points with seven rebounds while Doyle netted 14 points and had five assists. Kapral also reached double-figures, scoring 12 points. Oliff had five steals with five assists.
 
The Bears return to the Field House for the UAA home opener on Friday against Emory at 7:30 p.m. and face Rochester on Sunday at 12 p.m.
