Three Score in Double-Figures as No. 19 Men's Basketball Edges No. 23 Emory in UAA Action

St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 19 Washington University in St. Louis edged No. 23 Emory 85-81 on Friday evening to pick up the first UAA win of the season. The Bears are now 11-2 on the season with a 1-1 mark in conference play.
 
Junior Kyle Beedon led the Bears with 20 points, going 6-for-10 from the floor and 6-for-9 from 3-point range. Junior Drake Kindsvater netted 19 points to with nine rebounds and four steals while junior Hayden Doyle scored 17 points and dished out six assists.
 
In the opening five minutes of play, the Bears went up 7-2 after going on a 7-0 run. Doyle started the run with a jumper and Kindsvater drilled a 3-pointer before netting a layup to take the five-point lead.
 
A 3-pointer from Beedon put the Bears up 10-4 at the 14:24 mark but the Eagles scored three in a row to make it a 10-7 game.
 
A 3-pointer from sophomore Will Grudzinski and a pair of free throws from Doyle gave WashU an 18-9 lead with 11:30 on the clock before Emory went on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 18 midway through the first half.
 
The teams exchanged baskets and the game was tied multiple times over the next four minutes. First-year Lucas Vogel started what turned out to be a 10-0 run with a layup and Beedon drilled back-to-back 3-pointers. Sophomore Calvin Kapral closed out the run with a layup to put WashU ahead 36-25 with 3:40 remaining in the first half.
 
The Eagles scored the final seven points of the first half to leave the Bears with a 36-32 edge at the break.
 
Emory came out of halftime to outscore the Bears 8-2, taking its first lead of the game, 40-38, with 17:49 on the clock.
 
WashU answered with a 10-0 run to go up 48-40 with 14:58 remaining. Beedon drilled a shot from distance and Kindsvater hit the front end of a pair of free throws. Doyle hit back-to-back jumpers and sophomore Yogi Oliff hit a jumper to close out the run.
 
After a 3-pointer from the Eagles, the Bears had another 8-0 run. First-year Jake Davis put in a layup, was fouled and hit the ensuing free throw and Beedon drained another 3-pointer. Vogel closed out the run with a jumper to put WashU up 56-43.
 
A pair of free throws from Beedon and a steal and layup from Doyle extended the Bears lead to 15-points, 60-45 with 11:40 on the clock.
 
The Bears maintained a double-digit lead until 8:10 when the Eagles' Logan Shanahan hit a layup to close it to nine points, 67-58. The Bears, however, went back up y 14 points following a free throw from Grudzinski, a layup from Kapral and a steal and layup from Grudzinski.
 
Emory continued to hang on and made things interesting in the final 1:58. The Eagles scored seven-straight to make it a four-point, 83-79 game with 1:08 left. Shanahan slammed one home with nine second left to make it a four-point game again but the Bears held the Eagles off en route to the win.
 
The Bears went 28-for-69 (40.6%) from the floor and 11-for-34 (32.4%) from 3-point range.
 
WashU is home again on Sunday with a 12 p.m. game against Rochester.
