No. 14 Men's Basketball Drops One-Point Heartbreaker at No. 13 NYU

New York, N.Y. – The No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team suffered a one-point heartbreaker at the hands of NYU, falling to the Violets 65-64 on Friday evening. Both teams are now 12-3 overall with a 2-2 mark in UAA play.
 
Junior Hayden Doyle led the Bears with 20 points in the loss and had a team-high five assists. Junior Kyle Beedon netted 12 points of 4-for-7 from 3-point range and sophomore Will Grudzinski had 10 points and three steals. Sophomore Yogi Oliff scored seven points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
 
The Bears started the game on a 5-0 run, all from Grudzinski. WashU maintained a several-point lead for the next several minutes until the Violets made it an 8-7 game at the 13:48 mark following layups from Michael Savarino and Quinn Clark.
 
WashU answered with a 8-0 run, starting with a layup from Oliff followed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Beedon to make it a 16-7 game with 12:26 on the clock.
 
Another 3-pointer from Beedon at the 11:36 mark put the Bears ahead by double digits, 19-9 and back-to-back layups from sophomore Calvin Kapral and first-year George Gale put WashU ahead 23-9.
 
The Violets scored the next eight points to cut the Bears' lead to six points, 23-17 with 6:35 remaining in the first half. Another 7-0 run cut WashU's edge to 26-24 at the 4:00 mark.
 
Up two, first-year Jake Davis had an offensive putback to send WashU into halftime with a 30-26 lead.
 
The Bears opened the second half with a 3-pointer from Doyle to go back up by seven, 33-26. The Violets, however netted a 3-pointer and back-to-back buckets to tie the game at 33 at the 17:50 mark.
 
WashU built up as much as a five-point lead but NYU tied it again at 40. Doyle scored the next five points to put the Bears up by five again, 45-40, with 13:17 on the clock.
 
The game remained within six points until the 5:23 mark when Doyle hit a layup to give the Bears a 59-52 lead. Grudzinski followed with a steal and a layup, was fouled and hit the free throw to put WashU up by double digits again with just over four minutes left to play.
 
The Violets, however, went on a 10-0 run, ultimately tying the game at 62 with 1:41 remaining and following a Bears' timeout, took a 65-62 lead with 36 seconds remaining on a Spencer Freedman longball.
 
With 11 seconds remaining and the ball in NYU's possession, Gale forced a turnover and the Bears set up for a final play to tie the game. Following two missed 3-pointers, Grudzinski grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. He put in a pair of free throws with one second remaining and despite the effort for a last-second steal, the buzzer sounded.
 
The Bears edged NYU 41-36 on the boards and shot 9-for-26 (34%) from 3-point range.
 
WashU is back in action on Sunday with a 12 p.m. ET game at Brandeis.
