No. 14 Men's Basketball Stumbles at Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. – The No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team was edged by Brandeis, 59-54, on Sunday afternoon on the road. The Bears are now 12-4 overall with a 2-3 mark in UAA play.
 
Junior Hayden Doyle netted 18 points to go with six rebounds in the loss. Junior Kyle Beedon had 12 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Yogi Oliff scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out a game-high five assists.
 
In the first 11 minutes of the first half, the game was tied four different times, with WashU holding the lead one time, 8-7, at the 12:13 mark following a layup from first-year Jake Davis.
 
The Judges went on a 7-0 run to go up 19-12 with 5:54 on the clock. The Bears chipped away and tied things up at 23 following an offensive putback from Beedon with 3:13 remaining in the first half.
 
Doyle followed that with a 3-pointer to take a 26-23 edge and another shot from distance less than a minute later put the Bears up 29-25 with 2:04 on the clock. WashU took its biggest lead of the first half on a layup from Beedon with 1:06 left, going up 31-25.
 
A layup from Brandeis' Ryan Power sent WashU into halftime with a 31-27 edge.
 
Sophomore Calvin Kapral opened the second half with a layup to give the Bears a 33-27 lead.
 
The Judges followed with a 9-3 run to tie the game at 36 with 16:35 on the clock. The Bears went on to take a slight 41-40 lead after a jumper from Doyle with 13:05 remaining.
 
The game was tied at 41 and 43 and a 3-pointer from Brandeis' Quron Zene made it a 46-43 game in favor of the Judges.
 
A layup from Oliff and Doyle tie the game at 47 with 7:07 remaining and the game went on to be tied again at 49 and 52 before the Judges put together a slight run.
 
Brandeis scored five-straight points to take a 57-52 lead with just over 1:00 remaining in regulation.
 
A pair of free throws from Doyle with 58 seconds on the clock brought the Bears within three points but Brandeis sealed things with its own set of free throws with one second left.
 
WashU returns home for a pair of games, starting with a 7:30 p.m. game against Carnegie Mellon on Friday evening, which will also be Suits and Sneakers/Hardy Strong Day. On Sunday, the Bears will face off with Case Western Reserve University at 12 p.m.
