Staten Island, N.Y. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team fell to NYU 11-3 on Sunday afternoon to complete the UAA series. WashU wins the series 3-1 and are 20-8 on the year with a 5-3 mark in conference play.
NYU exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Argenziano hit a one-out single to center and Richard Beggy singled up the middle. Nate Pallotta reached base on a fielder's choice and Ryan Carr singled through the left side, scoring Beggy. Kosta Mocklis singled to short, scoring Pallotta for a 2-0 lead. Russell Burton drew a walk, prompting a WashU pitching change. Bruno Damaiani hit a bases-clearing double, scoring Carr, Mocklis and Burton to give the Violets a 5-0 lead.
NYU added another run in the bottom of the third inning. Mocklis and Damaiani were both hit by pitches and Dakota Barbet doubled down the left field line to score Mocklis.
The Violets scored another in the bottom of the fifth inning. Carr led off with a single to left and stole second. Mocklin hit a single to left center, scoring Carr for a 7-0 edge.
Barbet reached on a throwing error to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning and Alex VanLandingham drilled a double to center to put runners on the corners. Argenziano reached on a fielding error, scoring VanLandingham for an 8-0 Violets' edge. Pallotta followed with a two-run homer down the left field line to go up 10-0.
The Bears scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Brandon Buday led off with a single to right and moved up to second.
Harry Mauterer reached on a throwing error to put runners on the corners.
Shane Pellegrino drilled a triple to left center, scoring both Buday and Mauterer.
Clayton Miller followed with a sac fly to right field, scoring Pellegrino for a 10-3 game.
The Violets scored one final run in the bottom of the eighth inning. VanLandingham led off with a double to left field and Argenziano singled through the left side. Beggy hit a sac fly to right, scoring VanLandingham.
Pellegrino went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored while Miller finished 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Isaac Zhang took the loss on the mound, going 0.2 innings with five runs, four hits and a walk.
The Bears are home for a single game on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. against Rose-Hulman.
