Box Score 2 Madison, Wis. – The No. 19 Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team won its first two matches of the Midwest Invite on Friday afternoon to advance to Saturday's championship match against No. 1 Chicago.
Match 1: WashU 7, UW-Whitewater 2
The Bears won two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead.
Karen Gao and
Eliana Hanna defeated Autumn Bruno and Cassie Lee 8-4 at first doubles while
Ainsley Heidbreder and
Nina Moravek topped Courtney Day and Gianna Nikoleit 8-3 at third doubles.
Katherine Johnston and
Amber Edmonds fell to Kellie Ha and Kasey Schlicht 8-6 at second doubles.
Hanna notched a win over Bruno at first singles, winning 1-6, 6-2, 10-8. Moravek topped Nikoleit 6-2, 6-2 at second doubles while Johnston picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Lee at third singles. Edmonds defeated Schlicht 6-3, 6-1 at fourth singles.
Sophia Huynh defeated Kellie Ha 6-4, 7-5 at fifth singles while
Carolyn Tsung lost to Gracie Ha 7-6(2), 4-6, 10-8.
Match 2: WashU 5, Kenyon 4
WashU went down 2-1 following doubles.
Heidbreder and Moravek notched the lone doubles win, defeated Natalie Connelly and Erika Pontillo 8-5 at third doubles.
Gao and Hannah fell to Eleni Lazaridou and Allaire Berl 8-7 (7-4) at first doubles while Johnston and Edmonds lost to Shadia Amado Aguad and Eleni Dakos 8-4 at second doubles.
Moravek earned a 6-1, 7-5 win over Amado Aguad at third singles while Johnston defeated Dakos 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) at fourth singles.
Edmonds topped Lalasa Nagireddy 6-2, 6-2 at fifth singles and Huynh defeated Catriona MacIntosh 6-3, 6-3 at sixth singles.
Gao fell to Lazaridou 6-3, 6-3 at first singles while Hanna lost to Berl 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) at second singles.
The Bears take on No. 1 Chicago Saturday at 9 a.m.
