Baseball Drops Two at Emory

Atlanta, Ga. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team dropped two games at Emory on Saturday afternoon. With the wins, Emory clinched the UAA title. The Bears are now 25-11 on the season with a 9-6 mark in conference play.
 
Game 1: Emory 14, WashU 9
The Bears scored first in the top of the first inning. Brandon Buday reached base on an error and advanced to second. Shane Pellegrino flied out to left to move Buday to third and Braden Mazone was hit by a pitch. Clayton Miller singled to center, scoring Buday for a 1-0 edge.
 
Emory came out in the bottom half of the inning to score three runs. With two outs, Matthew Sicoli homered to left to tie things up 1-1. Henry Pelinksi singled to third and Jack Halloran followed with a two-run homer to left to make it a 3-1 game.
 
The Eagles scored two more in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Ellis Schwartz drew a walk and Sicoli hit his second homer of the game to go up 5-1.
 
WashU answered with two runs in the top of the third. Buday led off with a single up the middle and Pellegrino doubled to right center to bring him home. Mazone followed with a single up the middle, scoring Pellegrino to make it a 5-3 game.
 
Emory added four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Halloran led off with a double to left and Tyler McLoughlin double to left field to score him. Blake Dincman and Steven Hunt drew back-to-back walks. Grossman followed with another walk to load the bases and Schwartz walked to score Dincman. Sicoli singled up the middle to score Hunt and Grossman to put Emory up 9-3.
 
Another four-run inning in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Eagles a 13-3 advantage. McLoughlin led off with a single to left and Dincman doubled to left center, bringing him home. Adam Geller singled up the middle and then advanced to second on a throwing error, scoring Dincman. Schwartz singled through the right side, scoring Geller. Sicoli and Pelisnki were hit by pitches on back-to-back at-bats to load the bases and Halloran singled through the left side to score Schwartz.
 
The Bears scored two in the top of the sixth inning. Jack Miller was hit by a pitch to lead off, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Broghan O'Connor doubled to left to score Miller and went on to score on a Harry Mauterer single up the middle.
 
WashU put another run on the board in the top of the seventh. Magnus Dunn reached first on a fielding error and Jack Miller drew a walk, stole second and reached third on a throwing error. Dunn stole third and went on to score for a 13-6 game.
 
Emory scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pelinski drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Dincman hit a two-out double to left, scoring Pelinski.
 
The Bears added three more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Pellegrino reached base on a throwing error and Mazone hit a two-run homer to right field. Clayton Miller drew a walk and advanced two bases on a throwing error. Zac Malis doubled down the left field line, scoring Miller for a 14-9 game.
 
Mazone went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Pellegrino went 2-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored while Mauterer finished 2-for-5 with one RBI.
 
Will Henkel took the loss on the mound, pitching two innings with six earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts.
 
Game 2: Emory 11, WashU 1
The Bears took a quick 1-0 lead as Pellegrino hit a one-out homer to left field.
 
Emory tied things up in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Sicoli reached base on an error and Pelinski doubled to left center, scoring Sicoli.
 
The Eagles added another in the bottom of the second. McLoughlin hit a lead-off single through the left side and Zach Wasserlauf doubled to left to drive him home.
 
In the bottom of the third inning, Emory put up another three runs. Schwartz led off with a homer to right field and Pelinski drew a walk before stealing second. Halloran doubled to right center, scoring Pelinski. McLoughlin singled through the right side and Walker Woolf reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Halloran for a 5-1 lead.
 
Josh Katz led off the bottom of the fourth for the Eagles with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a Brok Liu sac bunt. Schwartz hit a sac fly to center, scoring Katz to give the Eagles a 6-1 edge.
 
With two outs, McLoughlin homered to left center in the bottom of the fifth, putting Emory up 7-1.
 
The Eagles scored their final four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Liu led off with a single to left field and stole second. Pelinski hit a two-out single to center, scoring Liu. Halloran singled to left field and McLoughlin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Woolf triple to right center, clearing the bases for the 11-1 Eagles' lead.
 
Buday and Mazone finished 2-for-3 while Pellegrino went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
 
Sebastian Guzman took the loss on the mound, going 4.2 innings with six earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts.
 
The Bears wrap up the series at Emory tomorrow at 11 a.m. ET.
