Baseball Falls to Emory in a Ninth-Inning Walk-Off

Atlanta, Ga. – The Washington University baseball team lost to Emory 6-5 on Friday afternoon to open the UAA series. The Bears are now 25-9 overall with a 9-4 conference mark.
 
The Bears scored first in the top of the first. Brandon Buday led off with a single up the middle and Shane Pellegrino singled through the right side. Buday went on to score on a throwing error by the pitcher for a 1-0 edge.
 
Emory tied things up in the bottom of the third inning. Ellis Schwartz hit a one-out triple to center and scored on a Matthew Sicoli ground out to second.
 
The Bears added two more in the top of the sixth. Pellegrino was hit by a pitch and Braden Mazone followed with a two-out single up the middle. Kaden Bernhard drew a walk to load the bases and Harry Mauterer reached on a fielding error, scoring Pellegrino. Mazone then went on to score on a balk to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.
 
WashU put up another in the top of the seventh. Jack Miller was hit by a pitch to lead off and Buday singled to right field. Pellegrino singled to third, scoring Miller for a 4-1 edge.
 
The Eagles pulled within one run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Sicoli reached on a throwing error and advanced to second on a balk. Jack Halloran moved Sicoli up to third and Tyler McLoughlin was hit by a pitch. Adam Geller singled through the right side to score Sicoli. Zach Wasserlauf followed with a single through the left side to score McLoughlin and make it a 4-3 game.
 
The Bears scored again in the top of the ninth as Pellegrino homered to left field.
 
Emory rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
 
Jacob Grossman drew a lead-off walk and Schwartz singled to right field. Sicoli hit a sac fly to right, scoring Grossman and Henry Pelinksi tripled to right field to score Schwartz and tie the game.
 
McLoughlin was intentionally walked and then stole second. Geller reached base on a throwing error, scoring Steven Hunt who was in to run for Pelinski.
 
Pellegrino finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs while Buday went 3-for-5 with one run. Bernhard finished 2-for-4.
 
Clayton Miller took the loss on the mound, pitching one inning with two earned runs and two walks.
 
The Bears continue the series at Emory tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
