Box Score 2 Cleveland, Ohio – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team dropped a pair of games to No. 8 Case Western Reserve University on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1: CWRU 8, WashU 3
The Spartans scored first in the bottom of the first as Kela Jagoda singled up the middle and stole second. Carli Tucci drew a walk and advanced to second, then scored on an Amanda Riely single to center.
CWRU added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Brianna Landers drew a lead-off walk and advanced on a Stevie Rieger sac bunt. Landers scored on a KaiLi Gross single to right second and advanced on a Jagoda single up the middle. Riely singled to left center and advanced on the throw, scoring both Gross and Jagoda for the 4-0 lead.
The Spartans put up two more runs in the bottom of the third, starting with an Isabella Russo lead-off homer to right center. Elizabeth Berry followed with a single to right field and advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on a Landers' fielder's choice and an error.
The Bears posted their first run in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs,
Olivia Craycraft drew a walk and scored on a
Kayla Nommensen double to right field.
CWRU answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Katelyn Lamm drew a lead-off walk and Berry doubled to right center to score her. Landers singled through the left side, scoring Berry for the 8-1 lead.
WashU rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Nommensen drew a one-out walk to get things going.
Emily Talkow, who came in to run for Nommensen, moved up on a
Sydney Schneider ground out and
Alex Rubin doubled to left to score Talkow. Rubin went on to score on a
Katie Gould single up the middle to make it an 8-3 game.
Gould finished 4-for-4 with one RBI while Nommensen went 1-for-2 with one RBI and one walk.
Jamie Burgasser took the loss in the circle, scattering nine hits with seven earned runs and five walks to go with four strikeouts.
Game 2: CWRU 7, WashU 2
The game was halted after five completed innings due to darkness. Per UAA rules, the game is complete following five innings if a stoppage is needed.
The Spartans exploded for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Gross led off with a single up the middle and then stole second. Jagoda grounded out, moving Gross up the third and she went on to score as Russo reached base on an error. Riely singled up the middle and Berry reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Anna Gobeyn drilled a three-run homer to center for the 4-0 lead.
The Bears scored two in the top of the fourth inning.
Erin Reardon drew a lead-off walk and
Natalia Pilpil hit her team-leading third homer of the season to right center, making it a 4-2 game.
CWRU put up its final three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jagoda drew a lead-off walk and reached third as Russo singled through the right side and then stole second. Riely singled through the right side, scoring both runners. Riely advanced on a Berry sac bunt, moved to third on a Gobeyn ground out and then scored on a wild pitch.
Pilpil went 1-for-1 with one run and two RBI while
Tami Wong finished 1-for-2.
Emma Urban took the loss in the circle with nine hits, three earned runs and one walk in four innings.
The Bears wrap up the series at CWRU tomorrow with an 11 a.m. ET game.
