St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team completed the sweep of Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon with two wins. The Bears are now 6-2 on the season.
Game 1: WashU 9, IWU 4
After the game was suspended on Saturday due to darkness, it was finished on Sunday morning starting in the sixth inning.
IWU got on the board first with three runs in the top of the first inning.
With two outs, Louis Perona singled to left center and Thomas Bleker also sent a single to left. Casey Swanson drew a walk to load the bases and Nick Pratscher hit a bases-clearing triple to right center to go up 3-0.
WashU answered right back in the bottom of the first inning.
Brandon Buday singled down the right field line and advanced to second on a
Shane Pellegrino single through the left side.
Braden Mazone singled through the right side, scoring Buday.
Kaden Bernhard followed with a single to center, bringing in Pellegrino. Connor Lindsay singled up the middle to bring in Mazone and tie the game at 3, then stole second.
Dax Braemer drove in the final run of the inning with a single up the middle to make it 4-3 in favor of the Bears.
The Titans tied things up in the top of the fifth inning. Jalen Ping hit a lead-off single through the left side and advanced to third on a Perona single up the middle. Bleker singled to center, scoring Ping.
WashU took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs,
Magnus Dunn drew a walk and stole second. Buday also drew a walk and both runners stole a bag. Pellegrino reached first on a throwing error, giving Dunn time to score. Then Pellegrino stole second and Buday scored on the throw.
The Bears put up two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Bernhard was hit by a pitch and
Harry Mauterer was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball. Braemer drew a walk and Dunn hit a single to short, scoring Bernhard. Buday then reached on a fielder's, scoring Mauterer to make it an 8-4 game.
The Bears added one final run in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs,
Hunter Goldberg singled to right center, stole second and advanced to third on the throw. Bernhard drew a walk and stole second and Goldberg scored on a throwing error.
Buday went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI while Goldberg finished 1-for-2 with one run scored. Bernhard went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Game 2: WashU 11, IWU 9
WashU put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Dunn singled to the pitcher before Pellegrino homered down the left field line to make it a 2-0 game. Miller then singled down the left field line and advanced to second on a
Broghan O'Connor single to second. Braemer drove in the final run of the inning on a single to right field, putting WashU up 3-0.
The Titans answered in the top of the second with two runs, starting with a Bleker single up the middle. Keenan Burgos singled to right field and Tommy Willard loaded the bases with a bunt. Evan Hutson reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Bleker. Hutson was then picked off but Burgos scored to cut WashU's lead to 3-2.
The Bears added another run in the bottom of the third inning. Goldberg reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on a
Chris Jacinto single through the right side. Both runners stole a base, with Goldberg crossing home plate to make it a 4-2 game.
IWU tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning when Hutson drilled a homer down the left field line.
In the top of the sixth, the Titans tied the game at 4-4. Hutson singled to short and moved up a base on a sac bunt from Aaron Miranda. Jimmy Gurgone singled to right center, scoring Hutson.
IWU took a 7-4 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Perona hit a lead-off triple to left center and scored on a Bleker ground out to second. Willard then singled to short, stole second and then scored on a Hutson single up the middle. Pratscher singled to right, scoring Hutson for the three-run lead.
The Bears answered with a three-run inning of their own in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 7-7.
Miller was hit by a pitch and
Anthony Gross drew a walk. Braemer singled through the left side, scoring Miller and putting Gross in scoring position. Both runners stole a bag and then, with two outs, Gross scored on a Jacinto sac fly. Braemer scored the final run of the inning as Buday singled to short.
WashU kept it going in the bottom of the eighth inning, taking an 11-7 edge.
Pellegrino singled to left and moved up a base when Lindsay was hit by a pitch. Miller drew a walk to load the bases. Gross drove in Pellegrino with a sac fly to take an 8-7 lead. Miller advanced to second on a wild pitch and Braemer was intentionally walked. Goldberg drew a walk, scoring
Jack Miller, who was running for Lindsay. Jacinto drew a walk, scoring Miller and Buday reached on a fielder's choice, bringing home Braemer.
IWU had a two-run rally in the top of the ninth inning. Perona drew a walk and Bleker singled to left field. Burgo singles down the right field line, scoring Perona and then Willard reached on a fielding error to score Bleker. The Titans left two runners stranded to end the game.
Pellegrino went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Miller finished 1-for-3 with three runs scored. Dunn went 2-for-3 with one run scored while Braemer finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Hank Weiss earned the win on the mound, going one inning with three strikeouts and one earned run.
The Bears are back at home next weekend with a series against Luther.
