Baseball Tops Illinois Wesleyan in 11 Innings to Open Weekend Series

St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team defeated Illinois Wesleyan 6-5 in 11 innings on Saturday afternoon. The second game – which was suspended due to darkness – will resume tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. prior to the scheduled noon game.
 
The Bears struck first, putting up two runs in the bottom of the third inning.
 
Hunter Goldberg reached base on an error and advanced to second. Brandon Buday singled to second and then stole second base. Shane Pellegrino struck out swinging but reached first on a wild pitch, giving Goldberg time to score for a 1-0 lead.
 
Clayton Miller struck out swinging but moved Pellegrino up a base. Braden Mazon reached on a short stop throwing error, scoring Buday for a 2-0 Bears lead.
 
Illinois Wesleyan added its first run on the top of the fourth inning. Jimmy Gurgone hit a lead-off single up the middle. Louis Perona reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second base. He went on to score as Keenan Burgos doubled down the left field line.
 
The Titans took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Casey Swanson led off with a single to centerfield and Nick Pratscher singled down the right field line. Dino Biggers drew a walk and Swanson went on to score on a Gurgone sac fly. Jalen Ping doubled to center scoring Pratscher for a 3-2 IWU lead.
 
The Bears tied things up at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Miller drew a walk and moved up to second on a Mazone single to center. Broghan O'Connor singled to right, bringing in Miller.
 
IWU added another run in the top of the sixth inning. Burgos was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball. Thomas Bleker drew a walk and Burgos advanced on a wild pitch. Swanson drew a walk to load the bases for the Titans. Burgos went on to score on a Pratscher ground out to third.
 
The Titans added another run to make it a 5-3 game in the top of the seventh inning. Perona singled to center field and then stole second before Burgos was hit by a pitch. Perona moved up to third on a Bleker sac fly to right and Swanson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pratscher singled up the middle, scoring Perona.
 
In the bottom of the ninth with two outs, the Bears rallied for two runs to tie things up at 5-5. Braemer got on base after being hit by a pitch before two-straight outs. Pellegrino doubled to left center, scoring Magnus Dunn, who was running for Braemer. Miller doubled down the left field line, scoring Jack Miller who was running for Pellegrino and sending the game into extra innings.
 
The Bears broke through to end the game in the bottom of the 11th inning. Justin Zachery led off with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a sac bunt from Goldberg. Buday doubled to right center, scoring Zachery for the 6-5 win.
 
Kaden Bernhard finished 2-for-5 on the day while Buday went 2-for-6 with one RBI and one run. As a team, the Bears collected 10 hits.
 
Kyle Coates picked up the win on the mound, improving to 2-0.
