St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team split with Case Western Reserve University on Sunday to split the UAA series 2-2. The Bears are now 15-6 and 2-2 in conference play.
Game 1: CWRU 10, WashU 8
CWRU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. RJ Christie singled and moved up to third on a C Connor Stephenson sac bunt. Grant Price hit a one out single, scoring Christie to give the Spartans a 1-0 edge.
CWRU went on to have a five-run fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead.
Christie drew a one-out walk, moved to second a Stephenson single and stole third. Price drew a walk to load the bases and Owen Levinson was hit by a pitch to score Christie. Stephenson scored on a balk and both Price and Levinson scored on a Jack Anderson single. Nick Harms scored the final run of the inning with a solo homer.
The Bears added three run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Kaden Bernhard and
Chris Jacinto hit back-to-back singles and Bernhard went on to score on a
Magnus Dunn fielder's choice to make it a 6-1 game. Dunn and Jacinto then each stole a base and both scored on a
Hunter Goldberg double to cut into the Spartans' lead 6-3.
WashU tied things up 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jacinto hit a one-out single and Dunn drew a walk before both runners stole a base.
Anthony Gross drew a walk to load the bases and all three runners scored on a
Brandon Buday triple to right field.
The Spartans came out in the top of the seventh to add three more runs and take a 9-6 lead over the Bears.
Anderson led off with a triple and Harms doubled to score Anderson. Zack Carinci doubled, putting Harms on third and Harms went on to score on a Trey Haley sac fly to left. Flynn Lenanan drew a walk and Stephenson singled before Tim Demetris was hit by a pitch, scoring Carinci.
CWRU put up another run in the top of the eighth inning as Anderson hit a lead-off homer to make it 10-6.
The Bears scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Buday drew a one-out walk and
Shane Pellegrino doubled, scoring Buday.
Clayton Miller reached on an error and Pellegrino scored on a
Braden Mazone ground out to make it a 10-8 game.
Jacinto finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Goldberg went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Alex Ardemagni took the loss on the mound, going 2.1 innings with three earned runs and three hits.
Game 2: WashU 9, CWRU 8 (10 innings)
The Spartans scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Anderson led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Carinci moved Anderson up with a single and he scored on a Haley single to make it a 1-0 game.
Nick Talarico drew a walk to load the bases and Carinci scored on a Jasiah Harris line out. Haley went on to score the third run of the inning as Stephenson reached base on an error.
WashU scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Miller led off with a homer to make it a 3-1 game. Dunn hit a one-out single and stole second and O'Connor drew a walk. Dunn advanced to third on a wild pitch and Dunn scored on a Mazone sac fly to right.
The Spartans added a run in the top of the fourth inning as Harms drilled a homer.
The Bears responded with another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bernhard led off with a triple and scored on a Dunn ground out to second to make it a 4-3 game.
CWRU came out to score another run in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Harris hit a ground-rule double. Stephenson then tripled to score Harris for a 5-3 lead.
WashU scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead. Miller led off with a single to left and Bernhard was hit by a pitch. Dunn reached base on a fiedler's choice to put runners on the corners and Miller scored on an O'Connor single.
Zac Malis drew a walk to load the bases and Buday drove in both Dunn and O'Connor with a single to left.
Justin Zachery hit a ground-rule double to left center, scoring Malis and putting WashU up 7-5.
CWRU tied things up in the top of the ninth. Stephenson reached base on a fielder's choice and Matt Trout drew a two-out want and Levinson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Anderson singled to center to score Stephenson and Trout to tie things up 7-7.
The Spartans scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10
th inning. With two outs, Harris drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Stevenson drew a walk and Harris stole third, going on to score on an overthrowing error on the catcher to go up 8-7.
In the bottom of the 10
th inning, O'Connor led off with a single and advanced to second on a balk. Goldberg and Buday each drew a walk to load the bases and another walk for Zachery walked in O'Connor. Pellegrino ultimately drew another walk that scored Goldberg to win the game 9-8.
Buday went 5-for-5 with two RBI and a walk while O'Connor finished 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Miller finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Joseph Hettinger picked up the win on the mound, going one inning with one run, no earned runs and one strikeout.
The Bears host UW-Stevens Point next weekend with games on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m.
