Memphis, Tenn. – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team defeated Alfred State 9-2 on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears are now 11-2 on the season.
WashU scored first in the bottom of the third.
Zac Malis singled and moved up on a
Magnus Dunn sac bunt.
Brandon Buday grounded out to second, putting Malis on third, followed by a
Chris Jacinto walk. Both Jacinto and Malis stole a base, sending Malis home.
The Bears added another run in the bottom of the fourth,
Broghan O'Connor drilled a one-out homer to make it a 2-0 game.
In the top of the fifth with one out, Dunn singled and moved up on a sac bunt from Buday. Dunn went on to score on a Jacinto single.
Alfred got on the board in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs. Sam Dickerson led off with a double and moved up to third on an error during a Nick Serce at-bat. B Burdett singled, scoring Dickerson. Gavin Moore then put down a sac bunt to score Serce.
The Bears scored again in the bottom of the seventh inning, starting with a single from Dunn, who then advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Clayton Miller drilled a double to score Dunn and make it a 4-2 game in favor of the Bears.
WashU turned it up a notch offensively in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring five runs. O'Connor led off with a single and stole second.
Shane Pellegrino singled,
Justin Zachery reached on a fielder's choice play and O'Connor reached third on an error. O'Connor went on to score on a pitcher's error.
Malis doubled, scoring both Pellegrino and Zachery, prompting and Alfred State pitching change. Dunn singled, advancing Malis to third and both runners moved up on a balk, scoring Malis. Dunn then scored on a Jacinto double.
Dunn went 3-for-3 with three runs scored while O'Connor finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Jacinto was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Malis finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The Bears wrap up their spring break trip tomorrow with an 11 a.m. game against Rhodes.
